Up in the Clouds

My Nephew just set up a new spot at the edge of my M-I-L's hay field, adjoining the Angelina Nat'l Forest.  I was mowing the hay field yesterday afternoon and saw his new set-up.  My gracious, it was 30' up in the tree.  I normally hunt 10-14' up but this thing was in the nose bleed section.

Anyone else hunt this high and Why?  I would be scared to death if the wind blows.

No need to. Definitely too sharp a shot angle as James said. Plus, not a big fan of heights. 15" is enough for me. But, to each his own.

Haha not me. 15' is high enough!! I know some guys that hunt that high though here in East Tx. Sometimes it takes a little more to get to some decent cover in these pines. I'll look for the perfect tree with cover lower down, or I'll hunt a ground blind.

Im a 12ft-15ft guy too. Even 20ft I find too high.

I don't like being high in a tree... No need imo.  Not a fan of heights either... My 20' rope with gear attached usually has a few feet still on the ground when I "settle in my spot"

He's probably a lot younger than most of us here. I remember being a lot less cautious then. After all I was invincible. He will learn possibly if he overshoots a few shots.
Me, to old and to stiff for climbing trees. I always preferred to ambush them on the ground.

I'm normally at 15-20 ft. But I will admit, I have had a couple of those 30ft nosebleed stands. The high ones were always due to steep hillsides where the deer were traveling on the high side of the stands. Even at 30ft, some deer were still eye level.

Speaking of being young and dumb many years ago. I used to climb with a Baker. Doesn't get any scarier than that. Or dumber.      Still have it and if anyone is interested, would be more than happy to send it forward.      

On the lease that I lost a couple years ago, we had a stand we called the Bottom Stand. Well, it was in the bottom, so that seemed like a good name. Anyway, this stand was the best deer stand I have ever had. Over the years, I shot every P&Y buck I have ever shot in my life out of that stand, including the velvet buck in my avatar. I picked a tree out that I wanted the stand in and started climbing. I usually don't go any higher than 15', but the stand would not work at that height. I went a little higher, then ever a little higher that that. When I finally found the perfect spot for the stand, it ended up that it was 25' to the base of the stand.

Man, I sure miss that place!!!

I let the cover tell me how high to climb. My pull up rope is 25ft so my platform is almost never higher than that.

If you can figure out the wind currents, you don't need to be 30', either way it never ALWAYS works.

I put cover around almost every stand without cover anyway, we have tons of pin oaks and the leaves won't fall off if you use the limbs and some rope and zip tys.

I hunt wherever I have to get to beat them every time. Sometimes it's 12', sometimes it 30+'. Its very steep in the area where I hunt and to hunt the flats sometimes you are at eye level on one side of the tree and 40' on the other. The Ol' lady keeps a pretty heatlhy Life Insurance policy on me!
