I had said on my last reduced weight bow...Last Post Promised!  However this Green Mountain Stingray 60#@28 reduced to 43#@28 is just too pretty...Cocobolo to die for in the riser, Lams of Bamboo on back, Yew, and Osage on belly.  Tiny tips were Jim Duclos's trade mark and I didn't touch those tips.  Reduced by removing glass on belly & back plus trapping the belly.  Then refinished entire bow.  Bow had a name on it which I removed...tippit

Jim built beautiful bows.......good to see you kept the bow and can now shoot it. Nice job

Tippit,I have a Green Mountain Stringray also. Mine is 60" 60#@27" with Coco Bolo riser and cherry ( I think black cherry) limbs.

I could be talked into a swap, hint hint. :-). I wish I had your talent.

I was and am a fan of Jim's work. Have a Stingray that was my 'go to' bow for years before having to drop weight as I've added some years. His narrow /deep core limbs and small tips are signature. He was also a master at rounding all edges. He explained to me that saved on finish wear over time.

Whittler,
You wouldn't like this bow...just too smooth & easy to shoot compared to 60#@27.

Nice job Tip. Question: have you had any problem with limb twist after removing so much weight?

That is a pretty piece of cocobolo! GM Longbows are awesome.

No...but I try to keep my limb tips original thickness out to 6 inches and keep limb with pretty much the same width.  Trapping either back or belly is the last thing I do to drop weight.  Ten to fifteen pounds glass is all I need to remove. Beyond that some trapping is necessary.  On the GM, I trapped the belly down to 6 inches from the tips...but the width on the back was original.  What you have to constantly watch is the tiller.  After each pass, I flex them through 30" to make sure I have everything even and it doesn't get away from me.

Out of about 50 bows that I've reduced weight, I've had one bow collapse but it was a very unique early Zipper by Bob Thompson...very thin pencil  limbs and extremely trapped belly to begin with.  I had showed the bow to Bob at Denton years ago.  It looked like a kids bow but was 60#.  He said he made four of them and the first three broke immediately.  Well I thought I could take some weight off the this bow.  After my first grinding pass and rechecking the tiller, the bow just collapsed.  I should have known better if Bob had so much trouble making it!

Nice work! If you wanted to donate one of your 58-62 lb Hill style bows to the poor preacher in Arkansas hunting fund I could send you my address. Lol

Keep 'em coming!  I've enjoyed seeing your posts over the last several weeks!
