I have been thinking a long time about getting a nice longbow and have drove myself crazy looking through all the makers and their designs. My mind keeps wandering back to thoughts of a 60" Big Jim Buffalo bow, 45#@26". I am thinking this will be a very nice bow for my shorter draw length.

Can anyone talk me out of the Buffalo? What alternatives would you all suggest for a 26" draw?

Petrichor

I won't talk you out of it. Sorry bro find somebody else.
Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow.

damascusdave

I think with your draw length even Big Jim might suggest a Thunderchild

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

Biathlonman

Jim makes a beautiful bow.  At your draw length I'd be ordering a 54" Toelke Pika or Treadway black swamp.

Crested Finger

Ddave, I was under the impression the thunder child was a short bow for people with a long draw?

longtoke, what wood combos are you thinking of? Something spalted I hope?

just becarefull its an addiction. my bow wall now sports over a dozen custom bows. the part that surprised me was they near the same price as a manufactured bow from the big companies generally.

I don't know anything about Big Jim's bows, but my ACS is the best shooting longbow I have ever shot. ACS bows are amazingly efficient and accurate.

Baith- I bet a 54' recurve would be really nice but im trying to keep my bow as long as I can while still getting into good powerstroke real estate, I just want a good all around shooter, not a little brush bow.

crested- As far as woods go I am thinking red cedar limbs then matching the riser depending on how the cedar looks. I have seen cedar in colorado that is deep purple and bright white, while others i have seen can be almost pink and orange.  All I know is I don't want any brown or black woods in it.

The biggest thing I worry about is how will I keep my mind off the bow for a whole year after I ordered  it  lol

screamin

With your short draw I'd go Dryad Orion with LBX  limbs or ACS.

Mr. fingers

If you order a Big Jim Buffalo you will be getting very special bow!!  I have a 60" buffalo and I draw 26.5. I originally wanted a 64" but after talking to Jim he  recommended a 60" he knows his bows and where they will perform at there best. He even told me if I got the bow and did not like the 60 he would, build me a longer one right away. After getting the bow I was just in awe!  I did mention to him after praising his awsome  work that I wish I would have added some magic glass behind my horn overlays. He again offered to rebuild me a new one right away with magic glass. I was tempted but my bow is so beautiful I did not want to part with it. It also shoots amazing way smoother and easier to draw than my Bob Lee recurve (both the same weight)  If you want red check out cocobolo. I got that in my handle and it looks amazing with my blk &wht Ebony.
Get on his list pronto !

Steelhead

The Buffalo is an excellent bow!Its also built like a tank and very nice looking.

I have had 62 and 64 inchers.I draw over 29.I liked the 62 incher the most.

The 60" would be a good choice for you at your draw.

awbowman

What screamin said if your budget can handle it - dryad with ACS limbs.

If not look at the Toelke Pika
62" Super D, 47#s @ 25-1/2"
58" TS Mag, 53#s @ 26"
56" Bighorn, 46#s @ 26.5"

I've owned 3 of Jims bow, they are absolutely incredible in workmanship and performance.a better bow you won't find.A little known fact is Jim actually makes a shorter version of the Buffalo LB ,called the Scout.I know because I named it for him .L believe its available in 54,56 and 58", this could be right up your ally with your draw length.Check with the little fella. It would be my next bow.
