A Birthday gift from a friend

Ron LaClair

I just got this from my friend John Lee. John knew Howard Hill and studied under Howard on his method of building the original Hill bows. He made the last three bows for Howard before he died.

"In honor of Ron LaClair's 80th Birthday on March 22, 2016 and for Dolly, Ron's beloved Beagle and constant Companion for many years. A copy of a Historic piece of Archery Memorabilia has been created in Bow named Dolly. Ron's love and promotion of the "true" American Longbow is renowned in Traditional American Archery History. Dolly, the bow, created for Ron is a duplicate of the laminated longbow Hill was making in California after 1932. Tempered Bamboo and Oregon Yew wood were bound together using Casein glue made from milk to a powder form then mixed with water. Before WW II there was no Fiberglass for backing and facing bows and only natural materials-wood, sinew, rawhide, horn or baleen were used. However, the forerunner of plastic, Vulcanized Fibre became available in the 30s and some bowyers used it for backing. Dolly has both Madake and Tea Stick Bamboo under the fibre with a Earl Ullrich flat grain Yew wood core. The glue is casein and the bow limbs, like back in the 1930s were reinforced with "size D" Silk rod wrap thread. Dolly is 67 1/4"nock to nock and 45#@27".

Happy Birthday Ron !"  John Lee"

That's cool!

Happy Birthday, Ron!

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people's sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.

Hmmm, if I had know about this project I might have been able to supply some baleen for the backing.
