I have to say, I love my Half Breed. It is a real sweetheart to shoot, and sends wood down range in a zip! 2 Wesleys (1 custom) 1 Big 5, 1 Cheetah, and a Redman......and I have to say it's my favorite......for now!   :goldtooth:
Noli rogare pro onia pauciora, rogate pro scapulas latiores.

I go afield with bent wood, stick and string in search of serenity  through my primal quest.

Best to ya in Oz land! Have family in Council Grove. Hope to someday go back for a hunt.

My Wesley Special arrived today. WOW. I wish I wasn't so backed up in the woodshop making Christmas gifts, I would shoot all night. More to follow...

Does anyone else order bows from HHA with a specified draw weight 3-4 pounds less than what you want on the assumption that it'll come in about right that way?

Other than HH, who else make a true hill style bow? The more I read this thread, the more it look like I will have to sale a bow or two and get a Hill bow... I would like a 70", 60#@30" bamboo/yew/elm, combination!

I have a Northern Mist Shelton made by Steve Turay. He builds several different Hill style bows. David Miller, Nate Steen, and several others have been mentioned in this thread. All have great reputations and make fine bows. I love my Shelton so far. I've only had it a few days, but it is smooth, quiet, accurate, forgiving, and seems plenty fast to me. It is a string follow bow. The workmanship is excellent.

Molson, I like the sound of that combo for a bow, but I'd have to go a little lighter on the weight for me.

I may have to copy you in a month or so. Good choice.

David Mitchell

I too love the Steve Tutray longbows I have (Northern Mist).  They are great Hill style bows--the Classic and the Shelton both. Here is a picture of one of my Hills (on the right) in a string follow design and one of my Northern Mist Sheltons on the left.  You can see the Shelton has a bit more pronounced string follow than the Hill which is hardly noticeable.

The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

Overspined

My robin hood Hill has significant string follow like your shelton. Maybe they will add as much string follow as you request..?

Rosco, I don't order Hills a different weight than I want. Some say they come in heavy.

Molson

Thanks Irish!  These Hill bows sure are addictive!

Craig told me he makes his string follow bows on the same form as the back set, just reversed.  The shorter the bow, the less the string follow. Steve has a form specific for the Shelton so they show a bit more follow in shorter lengths.

I've already got the specs picked out for my Shelton.  I can't get the grip I want in a two piece from HH but I can from Northern Mist.  Can't wait to see Steve at Kzoo to place my order!

Both of my Hill bows have a higher draw weight than marked.  One is higher by three pounds and the other by seven pounds.  I just order at the weight I want.  I don't want to order light and risk it being light.  I can always have it reduced if it's too heavy.

Molson,

Are you saying that Steve is making a t/d Hill style longbow? I didn't know that. What do you have in mind for a grip, if you don't mind sharing?

I'd like a t/d, but don't like the looks of the sleeves that I've seen photos of from various bowyers.

Irish Archer

I've always thought that the sleeve required a set grip type?

Overspined

Steve uses the connexion hinge.  This gives him the opportunity to adjust the grip shape to a point.  I had one i picked up used and liked it. You have to keep the brace height right or you get a grip noise if it is too low upon shooting.  It was too heavy for me though. I love my NM classic, and was going to order a T/D from him but I am afraid I wouldn't get it before September.  I ordered a Hill instead so I will surely have it by elk season. I don't mind the sleeve, I prefer the small sleeve. Another plus is they are all exactly the same, so you know what to expect.

I've always liked myrtle wood, so I decided to find a piece that I like with lot's of brown. It's taking me a lot of time to find this piece of wood. It's tiger myrtle with a AA+ grade. I'm having it shipped to Craig from the supplier this week. I'm still waiting until June 2013 for the bow to be built, it's going to be a special gift to myself.

Yes!  Steve will make a two piece using a Connexion Hinge as the take down.

I prefer a two inch dished grip. The sleeve Craig uses means you are stuck with the sleeve shape for your grip.  The sleeve is more of a round grip.

With the Connexion, Steve can make a standard Hill grip in whatever size you want.  It will have the hump of the Connexion on the back, but otherwise it is as you want it to be.  I've discussed this with him and he says it's no problem to make the 2" dished riser I want using the Connexion.

I love my Shelton, it is quickly becomming my favorite bow.  I am still surprised with the preformance it yields.  I guess I just assumed a string follow bow would be slower, a lot slower.  I like the ease of draw, the smoothness upon release and it is as quiet as my self bow.  I took it stumping this past weekend and had a blast!

Darren-

Your PM box is full so I couldn't respond.  I did not see that email.  I can't believe I missed out on that bow!!!!  Thanks for thinking of me though.

That Myrtle above is going to be sweet!!
