Thank you all. Deer season starts in 8 days. I have 3 dozen Surewood shafts I'm preparing for both deer and small game. I have one very big buck on my property that goes noctural during gun season with exception to the rut so out of my character I am going to specifically hunt him.  Good hunting to you all. David

Gang-

Go to *Bay and do a search on Howard Hill, There's a guy selling a Hill Commemrative bow built by John Schulz. The bow has never been shot and was built 28 years ago.

Thought you might like to see it.

That is an awesome Hill bow but way beyond my means plus I'm not a collector of bows I can't shoot.

I looked at a John Shulz "Bow School" bow that was pretty awesome too but again way!!! out of my price range.

Shoot! Who am I kidding, any bow right now is out of my means!...lol

I'm just praying my home re-finance is approved soon so I can keep on living here..lol

Muddster- you got a lot of us praying along with you brother!

Mudd

I give thanks for all of you!

I just got in from taking pictures of my reworked target range.

It's been too hot(mid 80's) for me to get all that excited about hitting the woods so I decided to make my range back stop better.

If I get my re-finance I will make a more permanent backstop by building a sand trap into which I'll be able to shoot my Hills and Hill style bows with any type of tip on the arrow that I want without having to worry about tearing up a target.

Thank you again everyone!

God bless,Mudd

I thought the price was too high also, but it was cool to see how this guy was inspired by Hill so much that he made a acrylic case for it and displayed the bow in his home or lodge. I bet there has been a lot of guy's admiring the bow and telling hunting stories around it over the past 28 years.

the problem with this bow school bow is that it is not a pure John Schulz bow.  I have a Schulz Legend made in 1989 that would have sold for less than the price of a new Hill a couple of years ago providing it would go to someone that knew what it was and would use it. Everything is relative to what ever the draw length that is used. Mine is the fastest 26" draw Hill style bow that I have ever seen, it has very little hand shock and it is also a very accurate bow. The only Hill style bows that I have ever shot that is more accurate are my 68" Schulz Hunter and one that I tillered and designed myself that is a 26" draw 68" fast taper lean and mean Hill blank, it is also very quick for what it is, I maybe could have choked a couple more fps if it was shorter, but I like the way it turned out. None of the bows that I have left are for sale, my shooting fingers have recovered, but $2500 is too much, even if it does shoot as good as the ones I have.

Red Tailed Hawk

Cahaba that is a sweet looking hill.

Nice shootin too.

I called Montana a few hours ago (it was past midnight my time, and opening shop time at Craig's)... Three to four weeks away!

Anyway, Craig and his family and friends have been having a good season so far, filling numerous freezers; and Jason is about to head-off on a buck hunt in a little while.

It seems that everyday I have had off the weather has been horrible for hunting   :banghead:   Today was another such day with the temps peaking in the 80s. Needing some soul soothing Hill time, I headed down to my basement make shift range and flung some arrows. I was shooting a touch over 18 yards and tonight everything seemed to click.

All I had was my phone handy but I think I'm getting this Hill system of shooting.

There are 6 arrows in the pic and my first Hill robin hood with my Hill Robin Hood bow.

I read this thread from beginning to end a while back. I then sold all of my R/D longbows and picked up a real longbow again  :)

It's nice to be back!

Nomad-

You picked up Yellow Dog, I really like how that bow came out.

Congrats,

Life takes the most interesting turns when you least expect it.

A few years ago, the closest neighbors we have moved to North Carolina to be closer to their son and grandchildren while the grandkids were growing up. They didn't want to miss all the fun of watching the grandkids grow up. Our neighbors lived in a two-story log cabin about three hundred yards from our place.

Well, now they live in North Carolina, and my wife and I have been talking about going to visit them for a few years now, and finally we bought the plane tickets and we are going to North Carolina in two weeks, to visit and see the sights of North Carolina for a full week. Neither of us have ever been there.

Hmmm. . . I says to myself, in addition to visiting our old neighbors, what could there possibly be for a bowhunter to do during the last week of October in North Carolina? Well, as luck would have it, my neighbor is married to a vegetarian, and is not a hunter.

. . . but his neighbor is! Not only that, but his neighbor owns some property, and said it would be okay for me to do a little bowhunting while visiting there, and said I could even hunt out of some of his treestands.

There is one problem, what I know about hunting from treestands could be put in a thimble, with lots of room left over.

Worse than that, I know even less about hunting whitetail deer. I killed my first mule deer buck in 1972, and have hunted mule deer for so long I feel like I know what they are thinking before they think it, but I know nothing about whitetail.

So, I borrowed a safety strap from Kelly Peterson, who was kind enough to mail one to me. Then I needed to start practicing shooting from an elevated position. So, I put a ladder in the back yard, right above a short hill in our yard, and figured that would be somewhat similar to shooting from a treestand.

Things look a bit different from up here, and the leaf I am using for a target sure looks small.

Here is the first shot. The 750-grain ash arrow folded the leaf in half, but did not put a hole in it.

A couple shots later, all within an inch of the leaf, I finally drilled it.

Now, with two more weeks of practicing, I just might be able hit a whitetail. Until, then, it's practice, practice, practice.

Any tips or advice that you experienced whitetail hunters could send my way would be greatly appreciated. The only thing I know about whitetail deer is they have small ears and don't bounce like a proper deer (mule deer bounce, they do not run!)

. . .Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, my neighbor's neighbor has also invited me to hunt one of his farms in Virginia. Are there any deer in Virginia?

Mudd

Rik you are in for a treat. The rut will be in it's early phase.

Yes Virgina does have deer!

And turkey, gray squirrel and Fox squirrel.

Now we are talkin' Mr Hinton ! I notice the absence of the bow quiver too ? Practicing without it ?
Hope to see pics soon of the Hill with a Whitetail . Are they smaller than Muley's ?

Kelly P might have a new toy soon too ... maybe ...

How does the Hill like those ash shafts ? been thinking of getting Ted Fry to send me some . They sound mighty tough and perhaps a perfect Hog and Roving arrow?

Rik...if you get nosebleeds from that height and forget to cant your bow when shooting, remember that there isn't a law requiring you to hunt whitetails from a treestand....hunt from the ground.  I visited Minnesota once in the fall...and roamed around the woods one afternoon.  I passed by numerous vacant treestands and walked within shooting distance of many whitetails just by stillhunting quietly.  It can be done.

JCJ

I have had great luck killing whitetail deer from the ground hunting from simple natural ground blinds. No need to mess with a treestand.

stik&string

Rik, like the others have said, if you are comfortable on the ground, stay there. I've even set up right under other existing treestands on my lease and have had success.
