Well yesterday I put in my resignation at my job, and May 8th I will be heading to  north Georgia with the family. I hunt in Jersey and to be honest it is small woods with houses and busy roads, and way to many people. So I am thinking that down in Georgia the hunting will be different, more open woods, different species, and terrain. I am sure some of my urban hunting techniques will need to change.

So what I am asking from my future southern brothers is, what are some hunting techniques that you think will help me out with the transition? I would like to start to prepare myself for the changes in hunting styles.

Thanks Tim

On a positive note, you will be getting closer to Big Jim's Bow Company.   :)

You're allowed more deer than you'll probably shoot. I think it is 12 does and 2 bucks one of which must be 4pt or better.
Will you be hunting in North GA or South GA. Big difference!

Don't know that I can speak to GA but as a Jersey kid born and raised till after high school... welcome to the other world.

Depending on where ya live as my Dad said when he and Mom retired and moved here to Southernmost IL, "I can walk out my back door and pee if I want to."

Enjoy your relocation.  Where are you going to move to?

Biggie, I will be looking forward to the grits and gravy (please no okra)and easy going folks. I am focusing my area to Cherokee County( North Georgia). I was stationed in NC and Southern living is all I want.

Any tips on hunting big woods? We normally leave tree stands up all year and build ground blinds.Does that kinda stuff work down there or is it spot and stalk kinda hunting. Is it hunting club style or solo hunting the preferred method.

You may be into some hardwoods in North Ga, but most of the state is pines.  Really good huntin though and some of the best huntin is around the city of Atlanta. I have killed a pile of critters in Oglethorpe Co..

I'm in Cherokee County. There is some public hunting ground around here and some clubs. Leaving a stand up all year depends where you are. I've had a few stolen. Most folks hunt out of tree stands but I'm going with an ASAT leafy suit this year and see how it goes. The land runs from river bottom land to mostly ridge and valley. We've got a fair number of turkeys around.

Our deer seem to be getting bigger all the time but the yotes are a problem. I'm a member of a 3,500 acre club which trapped 72 yotes last year.

Never hunted North Ga. but hearing from some Friends that live there it does not compare to South Ga.They come down here with smiles.RC

I live in Cherokee county close to Woodstock.

You'll need to stop by one evening and we'll chat some.

Them north Ga yankees are always complaining about big crowds in the woods.  I normally hunt 50-60 times before running into someone away from the road.  I like it down here in the swamps!

Well you have two big clubs that do shoots and all that.  Traditional Bowhunters of Georgia (TBG), and North Georgia Traditional Archery (NGTA)  based out of Gainesville up in Hall County.  Both clubs cross paths all the time as most of the guys in NGT support TBG.  TBG does quite a few hunts and 3D shoots about four times a year.  NGTA has 3D shoots the first Sunday of the month Jan-Aug.

It's hard to come across a better group of guys.  Most of them meet up here:  http://forum.gon.com/forumdisplay.php?f=48   I'm not sure which guys will be in your area but if you jump on over on the other site you will probably have a few pop up.
