Question: Is my bowstring breaking?

Okay, so, I was un-stringing my recurve bow, and I did it on the wrong end I guess... So, now it has a bit of white string showing at the top of the bowstring where it connects to make a loop. I was wondering if it will break when I pull back to shoot, and like hit me in the face or something?

It sounds like a strand may have broken. Depending on how old the string is it should be retired. When in doubt remember strings are cheap, bows are not.

Stumpkiller

The serving spins around the main strands and is just there as a anti-chafe barrier.  If it is only the serving you can renew it with fishline or nylon thread.

BUT, if a bowstring breaks it can cost you a bow so when in doubt, replace it.

True, if you're not sure it pays to be on the safe side.

I just bought my bow, the man who sold it to me said he just assembled it the day I got it.  The strand has not broke, it seems like the loop was slipping.  I have done target practice, strung and unstrung it many times now.  It is not worse, nor better.  It shoots like a dream  :)

i always try to keep extra strings on hand incase if eel one is "worn out" or about to break.
(BTW the hunger games series is da' bomb)

Mockingjay it is much better to leave the bow strung if you are shooting it even only once in a while. I have had bows strung for years with no problem. The most damage occurs to bows and strings by constantly stringing and unstringing them!! Get a new string if your worried and leave the bow strung. Shawn

Shawn,

Before offering that advice you should as if it's an "all natural" bow.  If it's a glass bow leave the sucker strung.

Is this an endless loop string?
It sounds to me as though the string got down to the fat part of the limb, and the serving on the loop spread out because of the acute angle that the loop had to achieve in order to "stretch" around the limb. If so, it is merely cosmetic.

If you think your string is breaking it's better to change it,trust me you don't want it breaking at full draw.

I know exactly what your talking about, mine looked like that for about 75 shots before it broke!  :nono:  Just go ahead and get ya a knew one.

RainyDayBows

If your not sure about your string its best to change it . and keep a 2nd string as a back up better be safe then sorry

Duncan

Could be the serving just shifted but as a wise archer once said, "when in doubt, change it out"

Post a photo if you can. It's hard to diagnose based on description alone. If you're not sure how to post a photo email one to me and I'll do it.

My is a PSE Razorback 30 pull weight, it's made of all wood except for the metal that holds it together.  I've done my research on line (This post has been up for almost a month now) and they said to un-string your bow after you are done shooting for the day.  I have been doing that ever since.

I would post a photo if I could, but my other computer is getting repaired.  :(

FYI, your bow has a hardwood riser and the limbs are laminates of wood and fiberglass. It's considerably different from an all wood bow.

If you do leave it strung it is better to hang it vertically from a peg as I understand or like I do mine with the string horizontal across two pegs. Never stand it in a corner on the limb tip. Just my 2cents.
