I picked up the newest addition of Trad and the article on sharpening finally got me able to put an edge on a broadhead. I've always just used throw away blades in my wheelie days and this has been one of the hardest skills for me to develope. It was the part about how to take off a burr, anyway pretty happy right now but still want to get a strop and compound, any suggestions?

Any tool is only as good as the experience of the person using it. Many successful sharpening techniques. The "burr" may be influenced by the quality, hardness, & temper of the steel. You may straighten it instead of removing. Bottom line, will your edge shave? Generally, hair popping results from ultra-fine abrasive (polish) properly applied resulting in a very straight sharp edge. This might be your strop w/compound. Or, maybe an ultra-fine stone. Get polish compound or rouge at the hardware store.

Anytime. JFTR, I once told a TG'er I'd never seen a razor edge from a file. He proved me wrong. Just cause I can't doesn't mean it can't be done. Might have been Joe Skipp or another one of the older stalwarts here. Just proves you can teach an old dog (me@60) new tricks.

I've got a piece of hard maple I strop with.  My father-in-law was a cabinetmaker and he showed me that as a way to dress the final edge.

With good light and magnification, like the fly tyers and jewelers use, one can actually "see" a sharp edge. Loog at dull and nicked edges to get an idea of the task in front of you.A sharp edge looks "sharp" and is visually free of defects.
