Look at vortex and their new line of optics for 2011, hard to beat their service and vip warranty.

Second vote for vortex optics.

Nikon makes a good quality 8x32 compact in their Monarch series. Give it a check. They now have their:  "Forever Warranty" Good Luck

I have a pair of Burris signatures that i got a few years ago. They are 8x42. i really like them and they seem to last well.

I would second the Nikon Monarch series

For that price range I would also look at the Vortex glass.

Good luck

8x30 swarovski's are hard to beat. they will give a lifetime of service.

you get what you pay for

Leupold Yosemite 6X30 or 8X30 are very clear, with great depth of field (deer POP out at you), field of view(wide-angle) and affordable. I recommend the 6X.  If these were made when I bought my Docter Optic 8x32 BGAs I'd have saved a bunch.
