I know nothing about carbons. Do you all think I good get by with Beman ICS Bowhunter 500s out of a 40# bow with a 30" draw. Bow is Hoyt Excel with Wood/Glass limbs. The problem with 600s is my 30" draw.

With those, I would ofcorse keep them full length & use at least 150gr. up front & you should be close enough to tweak it some although you may need a little more weight up front depending on shooting

Because of you're DL, is that 40# at your length or a 40# bow but shooting at 30" length?

3 Rivers and other suppliers have carbon test kits available so you don't end up buying a dozen shafts and find out they're the wrong spine. I think I remember one supplier that sold single shafts but I can't remember who it was. Most suppliers are very willing to offer guidance.    

If I were starting out, I'd research the various brands and email the manufactures or suppliers for some quidance. At your draw weight, you'll most likely be in a higher spine shaft. However, each shooter and bow are an individual team. On this sight there are carbon spine charts that will guide you toward the right direction.
