One of my best friends is in the Coast Guard and moving to Homer Alaska In June. We have talked and I have decided to wait until 2012 to head out that way for a hunt, gives him time to settle in & make connections. Anyway Im starting to do my homework now to find out what kind of bowhunting options I will have in that area. Looks like a good area for black bear but what else? Any moose,or caribou hunting near by. Any advice would help.
Thanks in advance, Phil Tuccillo

I've been in the vicinity for two years now.  Poor moose population, hard draw caribou.  Pretty much black bear, halibut, and salmon for a unguided NR.  The season is year round however on black bears.

If you hunt south of Homer you will see black bears.  Around Homer there are a few Grizzly, which makes baiting a problem.  Alaska Coastal Marine and Homer Ocean offer great boat hunts but they are starting to get a little pricey.  The fishing is good pretty much anywhere.

Black bear hunting around Homer is great.  Done it twice solo.

Is their good spot & stalk oppurtunities for bear or are you better of baiting?

Great halibut fishing. Do your homework and you should be able to come up with hunting opportunities, especially for black bear. Take your camera. Can't believe the view as you are entering Homer.

I went on a halibut fishing trip there about 10 years ago.  The fishing was excellent.

There were a lot of float planes based there if I remember correctly.  Perhaps an opportunity to pick up a flight to another area for a hunt?
