I am living in Del Rio, TX. Is there anyone close who could help me set up a traditional bow? I shot one years ago but I could never get everything right. Could someone help?

You might want to edit your title to something like, "Need some help in Texas" or something similiar. That'll catch the attention of folks down your way when they are scanning the thread titles.

Well, I'm in Texas, and a rookie myself, but I'm about 8 or 9 hours away in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area (which itself is bigger than at least one or two of the smaller states back east -    :D ).  I know the smaller-state folk meant well, but maybe you should re-edit - lol.  'Course, I only jest in fun!

Anyway, here's a bump for a fellow Texan.  And be sure to check out the Trad folder over at Texasbowhunter.  They might be able to direct you to some experienced trad shooters near the Del Rio area.

Why don't you give the general population here the specs on your bow, string, and your arrow specs as well.  This place is full of helpful folks no matter where they may be.

ok, my setup right now is a samick hawkeye RH 55#@28. But the thing is I only have a 26" draw. Im shooting easton 2018's cut to 28" right now with 150gr tips. I would really like to shoot carbons tho, so some guidance on those would be good too please. The problem Im having is that the arrows have no speed what so ever and they dont fly well either. They porpise and fishtail so bad im supprised they even hit the target. My shooting is very inconsistant also. I know this alot with out being in person but any help would be appreciated.

To many variables to really give you good consultation.  Arrows could be ok and your form is bad  and also  plucking string could be the problem.  Your arrows are over or under spine.  Your arrow nock is oriented correctly etc etc  

Most of the time its the shooter and not the equipment. Correct form is everything.

Hey, why don't you come to the Texas Hill Country Shoot in Vanderpool,Tx April 8, 9, and 10. There will be bowyers and arrow makers and a bunch of trad shooters. You would get set up just fine.

Or, I live in Austin and you can come by the Austin Archery Club and we will help you out.

Ryan...Can you make it to the shoot in Vanderpool 8-9 April?. It's a little drive(Texas) from you. Will be lots of Trad guys to hookup with. I'm planning being there to shoot and as a vendor. Just look for a sign that says "longarrow" or PM me and I'll send you my phone.

I think the 2018's are too stiff for your set up even with the 150 gr tips.  2016's at 28" with 125 gr tips should get you some good, clean, and faster flight.

As for carbons, Gold Tip 35/55's at 28" with the standard aluminum insert and 125 gr points ought to do the trick. If you want heavier carbons try Gold Tip 55/75's with 50 gr brass inserts and a 260 gr head.

If you want to shoot carbons you might consider Arrow Dynamics. They are tapered, which really helps them get out of paradox quick, and makes them shootable out of a wide range of bows. I can shoot the Trad Lites out of all my bows, from 45 to 55 lbs, Longbow and Recurve by just changing point weight. The Trad's come in a nice looking woodgrain. Sure makes tuning easy. I shoot Carbon Express 3050 Thunderstorms also, especially at shoots where I know I'll be losing/breaking some. Several sponsors sell the AD's , but I got my first ones from Ted Fry at Raptor Archery. Give him a call and he'll get you all set-up. They also come up in the classifieds sometimes. I shoot the same weight as you, and draw 26" also, and find these two types of carbons to work very well for me. If you want to try the Thunderstorms send your address by PM and I'll send you a couple. That way you'll know if you like them before you invest in a bunch of them.
