That I shoot so much better when out wandering than I ever can do in the backyard on my own target? I wonder if the unknown distance thing makes me concentrate harder?

If you think about it, you pick objects to shoot that catch your eye, which in turn, means they stand out better and are therefore easier to concentrate on.  Could be the ambiance though.  

You could be simply getting bored with your backyard target and your concentration wanes.  I know this happens to me and if I'm not shooting good at a dot, I'll start plinking at blades of grass or dandelions and shoot much better.

I think so.  Shooting the same shoot over and over again for me causes me to get complacent about much of the shot process.  Also a target of opportunity while wondering is often one that really grabs your attention in the first place, and I think that is an easy target to focus hard on.

Not even close---I only have about 15 yards in my backyard, I will shoot out there 30 or so out screwing around.

i do the same as you. i think its bordum. i plan on building a target launcher to throw up foam disks to sshoot at with some flu fus in my upper field behind my house. i seem to do better exspecially when im screwing around JUST FOR FUN but when i stare at a target it seems like i cant hit the broad side of a barn even if i was standin in it.

I'm more forgiving when I'm stump shooting.  Within a couple inches is a kill.  Targets are a little more, umm, revealing.

I wonder if the whole "just for fun" thing doesn't have a lot to do with it? Mr. Scifres---your spot on with that! BTW, your sig line is a keeper.

I've wondered the same - I have a block target I use but I also put water bottles in the yard at different distances and shoot zwickey's at them. I find I shoot more consistent at those targets even if I stretch the distance.

I've concluded shooting at smaller objects falls into the aim small/miss small theory.

When I'm actually tuning, everything works out ok. BUT, when it comes to simply going out to loose a few, it gets ugly.

I think that when you a are stumping its like shooting with one arrow it s easier to maintain concentration.

When you are out stumping, do you shoot just one arrow?

If so, it is just a concentration thing.

I cannot shoot more than one or two arrows with the accuracy I want, before retrieving them.

The break you get while you walk to pull your arrows gives you time to rest and recharge so you can concentrate to the FULLEST again.

Whenever I shoot broadheads, I always shoot just one arrow so I did not damage other arrows. Before long, realized I was a better shot with broadheads than field points. THEN I realized, it was my concentration level staying so high by shooting just one good shot.

I shoot the same way, stumping is very fun for me. I always seem to do very well when out playing.

There is much to be gained by completely focusing while taking only one shot that must count from different ranges and/or targets.

Cmpnds @ targets was huge boring. Haven't been on a range since in 33 years. Distance variation keeps me keen & stumps on the run.
