I killed a doe with a head that I knapped two seasons ago.  I still can't get over that.  I was more excited about that kill than my very first deer kill.  Next challenge is to make a self bow.

These are what my son & I hunt with now.  He makes all of them.

All materials that are used to make points when they are chipped make a very fine dust that is called silica and when breathed into your lungs the lungs can not get rid of it and it builds and causes breathing problems.  I am sure that you have heard of black lung that coal miners get, it comes from breathing silica dust.

Never chip inside, as you will just contaminate the entire area that you chipped in.  Always chip outside and it is best if you have a slight breeze.

A friend of mine in Washington state just sent me some Obsidian heads that he knapped and I sent him a box of flint. We plan to make some trades in the future cause he's got the Obsidian and I've got the Flint (chert) so we can both have some of each.

He did a real good job on the heads, much better than I can do. He said that the Flint works easier if you heat treat it, which I have never done but I've read about it.

He also said that it's best to wear gloves and eye protection when knapping Obsidian and I would assume the same for TV glass or even fish bowl glass because of the microscopic flakes will cut you to pieces.

He mentioned that some guys have made successful heads from toilet bowl glass.....anybody heard of this? I know where I can get all the TV glass and toilet bowl glass I want, just have to pick it up and carry it home.

The more this subject comes up the more interested I become about it. I plan to get some more river cane soon and I can definitely see a completed set of river cane shafts with stone or Obsidian points and some natural barred turkey feathers in the near future.

BTW-- Where do you all get your pine tar or pitch to smear over the tie downs for the stone points?
I need to get some of that if I decide to make some stone point arras.

If it was not for rabbits I would never get a buck.

Killdeer

Oh cool! I get to trot this one out again!   :bigsmyl:
Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

Toilet bows are a ceramic, they are chip-able but are very course and grainy.  Make lousy points.

By the way knappers call it Johnny stone.

This is some good stuff. I have been gathering up a bunch of agate and obsidian this winter getting ready to make a few.

Arrow30- Here's my very first arrow using an Obsidian point and river cane shaft (missouri river variety) I thought I'd add it to your collection here. A friend from Washington state made the head and he said he can get all the Obsidian he wants up there.

This is my first all natural arrow build, so it ain't perfect, but it shoots awesome. I shot it today to see how it flew and I was completely amazed.....it flew like a dart! Wow, that was cool.

Yeah I know what the feathers are.  I found the owl one at the cemetary where my father in law is buried and I am not sure where the hawk came from picked it up off the ground somewhere.  If they want to raid me for that I guess I will go to jail.  LOL.

An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.
