Oil-based wood stain, water-based wood stain, analine dye, Rit dye, natural pigments, leather dye, it all depends upon the look I'm going for on that particular set.

Stumpkiller

Three Rivers alcohol based stain.  When that runs out I'll probably go with MinWax.

I hope to be building my own woodies soon and would like to make them a darker brown than the wood arrows I usually see. Any suggestions for a specific Min Wax color that will do this?

Dark Walnut or Jacobean. It also depends on the wood you're using. And you can let'em soak longer for a bit darker finish.

Powdered rit dye disolved in alcohol. Soaks in and drys pretty quick.

Dark brown leather dye (Febrings) I think its called..  get it at most shoe repair places and tandy leather or a saddle shop... works awesome and can change shade by just adding a bit of water and drys super fast and dont get sticky or smell like minwax does   :)
Try it and you will never use anything else I promise

Saw a nice article somewhere about taking your osage shavings and boiling them, and you get a great medium yellow to orange stain.  You can also use the sawdust to do the same.  I think I am going to try it.

Don't forget the water based Minwax choices either. You can get a couple nice yellows in it too.

Ive used water based and alcohol from 3r.  Ive used minwax too.  Polyshades with the stain mixed into the poly is great also and I am doing a dozen surewoods with it as we speak.  All good stuff!  The alcohol takes longer to get because it has to ship ground.  All good stuff tho!

GoBow

I used water based analine dye when I was working with ash.

Fiebing Leather Dye, Fiebing Professional Oil Dye, or Minwax Wood Stain, depending on what I grab.  I I have used them all regularly.
