So does anyone know how to prepare a beaver tail to use in the making of grips and other trad gear? I plan on putting the snap on a couple this early spring and would like to know how to make better use of the "scraps". If you know what I mean. Thanks in advance for any info.

A recent issue of TBM had a nice article detailing how to do it.  I think it was only a couple of issues back--written by Krista Holbrook.

i just made one for a self bow. i skinned the tail out. let it dry. when ready to make the handle, i soaked it in water til soft.  cut it to size and put it on. also used two small scrapes as the rest.rubbed with some neatsfoot oil..

Best to tan them. They offer much better service this way.

C'MON!!!! Someones gotta have a copy! How about just copying the article and mailing it to me. I will return the postage if ya want.

BigJim, how do you go about getting them tanned? Do you just cut it around the sides and flesh it like the rest and send it out to a tannery or do you do it your self? I haven't ever tanned anything myself so I am kinda skeptical about that but if there is a possible way to do it, they are free to me and I will give it a try. Thanks,Mike.
