I bought a guthook ring knife and was wondering what I could use to sharpen the blade, it is fairly large for a gut hook,, a 1/8 inch ceramic stick would be great do they make such a critter

Try a 1/8" chain saw file, I think you'll find it works well.

I use a small tapered diamond sharpening rod. The kind that slides into it's self for a handle. When it's closed it looks like a pen. It works great on a gut hook.

There are different size chain saw sharpeners also to find the right size.

After you use the round file, you can wrap some fine sand paper around the file and finish it off.

even a fine file makes me cringe....a little ruff!  Ceramic rod or triangle stick and uniformly work it in small half moons with light pressure.  It'll get creepy sharp!  thats how Ive always done mine.....Buck Crosslock and Schrade Old Timer with plenty of miles on them.

A honing stick for chef knives would work you can get them at most stores.

For a poor man you can get a ceramic rod from a 480 volt light bulb. We would recycle the burnt out bulbs from the steel mill I worked at to sharpen our pocket knives. You break the outer glass and remove the ceramic rod that are inside with the filament, some are 3/8" or 1/4" in dia. Recycle when you can     Good Luck

Might try a pencil or smaller "dowel shaped" object with fine grit sandpaper wrapped around it.

Try the diamond rat tail sharpener, but not the skinny ones.  I like something larger so that I can achieve the proper angle the first time around.

GMASIUK and Lin Rhea have it right on.

I take a sheet of 800 or 1000 grit wet/dry paper and just roll it up to the diameter I need. Then strope with rolled up brown paper.

I glue a piece of 1000-2000 grit sand paper on a arrow cutoff , i have several made up ahead. love my " Zipper", guthook.

I use the side of my hone steel from Schrade to keep my hook nice & sharp.

I use the exact same thing. As I recall, I picked it up at Gander Mountain for around five dollars or so.
