Just getting into trad hunting. Missed a few deer this fall, but what a rush! I'm using 2119 arrows with a 175gr. VPA terminator BH. They fly great but should I use a heavier arrow for elk than what I have? 52# at 25.5" draw, 26 1/4" arrow, 510gr total weight.

I think if you go with the 10+grains per pound formula you're on tract.
Isaiah 49:2...he made me a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver.

I shoot between 10-12 gpp for elk with high FOC these days.  Still don't know if I'll use WW or Abowyer heads.

I like at least 10 gpp. with a good % of FOC.

The same that I practice with  :)  They are 680 grains out of a 62# longbow. Get close, keep them sharp, put the arrow in the right place.

I shoot carbons with 2 blade Magnus for a total of 640 grains out of a 54 lbs at 26" longbow.  The penetration on a bull I took with this set-up was impressive.

I am just under the 10gpp so I guess I should be ok. Thanks for the input guys!

steadman, I have a eight year old, and sometimes they make more sense than we do. gotta lov em'

I shot a 618 grain arrow with 250gr broadhead with FOC in the 20's on my elk this fall. I think also the 10gr formula is best.

i like 10-11 gpp ... ull be fine if u keep ur shots at resonable distances and put the arrow where it counts.

I shoot and hunt with bows weighing between 53 and 58#.. I shot the 58#r's for elk with  Gt5575 and a 250VPA's and they come in right at 585 gn,  but then I use this same arow set up with all of my bows.

740 grains out of a #60 at my draw (30 inches)and an ACS CX. I don't want to lose one because of not enough penetration. Gary

Ragnarok Forge

584 grains out of a 55lb R/D longbow drawn to 30 inches.  FOC 29.7%.  It took me 2 years and a lot of money to work these arrows up.   For dangerous game as in Grizzly, and Large African game I am planning to hunt, I am shooting 650 grain arrows out of the same bow at 654 grains, FOC 22%.

The next time I hunt elk or moose, I'll likely use the same arrows I was successful with last time on those two species -- 500-grain carbons with 125-grain 2-blade heads.

Shedrock

The last bull I killed was with a 640 grain cedar tipped with a woodsman, out of a 58# bow. I got a pass-through with the head, not all the arrow.

I like 550-650 grain arrows with my bows in the 56#-59# class.
