The string serving on my 55# montana l/b is too thick, as suggested previously I've had to file my arrow nocks. I was shooting good for a couple of months, but lately I've been having a few nocks break, I think they are weak from being filed down. I cant shoot knowing that the nocks may break. My question is are the strings that come with a montana normally like this ? What do you pro's out there suggest for a string. I dont have a local archery shop to help so I will have to order a string when I can afford it, until then I'm stuck with a fat serving and a nervous shot, suggestions.

Heat the nocks in boiling water and press them onto the string (or even better - a nail or bamboo skewer the size of the string).  Makes a tight fit and they last better.

stumpkiller, boiling the nocks will make them larger without weakening them?

Re-serve the string with a smaller serving, or order a new string that will give you the proper fit for your nocks.

What kind of arrows are you shooting? Did you have a skinny string before and use snap nocks? Most of the strings are served to accomodate the standard nocks out there.

What arrows and nocks are you using Richie? Your Montana probably came with an endless loop string, and the factory strings can be very "fat" I personally like a flemish twist in B50 and use diamondback or brownells green crown serving for the serving. The montana has a 64" amo correct? I personally wouldn't file or heat nocks I feel it weakens them and its hard to get them all the same.
YOU HAVE TO STAND FOR SOMETHING OR YOU'LL FALL FOR ANYTHING !!!

I'm using 28" 3555 gt.s with standard nocks. Before I filed the nocks they were extremely tight.

Fischman, where would be the best place to get the flemish string you are suggesting?

Talk to LBR, a couple responses up from this.
He's a pro string maker from way back and he'll get you going good.

Can you get measurements? My nock slots are .112" and my BW PL string is at .008". I am guessing I have .118" serving and will try redoing it with .122" serving, hopefully for a perfect fit. Will let you know how it works out.

Never do anything to weaken an arrow nock.

This has been brought up before as uni-nocks are small......do a search but I think it was stated that the 3D nocks have a wider throat for those of us with dacron strings. I havent had to check it out yet.

Richie, could you count the strands? More than likely a 16 strand dacron.

If you stay with a dacron, I would go with 12 strands. Personally, I would put any of the HP strings on it. They come from the factory, presently, with D97. With that material you could shoot 10-14 strands.

Shoot me a pm, I can send one for you to try. Hate for you not to be shootin!
