Does anybody have a bow made of this wood? Seems i had a duck call a few years back made of this and it was beautiful. I just put a deposit for a new bow and was considering using this wood so if you have any pics please post. Thanks

I had Craig at HH Archery make a Half Breed bow blank for me,and I sent him a piece of goncalo alves for the riser.I like goncalo alves for a riser wood, some is pretty plain looking and some has some nice color.Don't have any pic's of mine but it is one of my keepers.

Most of the Herters perfection bows were made of it. A lot of people thought it was a type of rosewood but my Uncle's friend worked there and it was all Goncalo alves according to him. It comes from central and south america, some call it tigerwood. I've got a huge 72" Herters made of it but its stripped bare right now, not much to look at. heres an older Herters
I've seen a few Cari-bows made of it also.

oops, image too wide, no more than 640, please

Blackhawk

Smith and Wesson revolver grips have been made of this nice wood for many years.  Some of the earlier Bear bows from the late 60's (Kodiak Hunter) were made of Goncalo Alves, which is also called Tigerwood or Brazilian Koa.

I'm not sure why it's not used more frequently.

They called it "Zebrawood" back then - same tree (Astronium graveolens).  (Should look familiar, Blackhawk!)

Zebrawood is an entirely different thing Stump, ZW grows in Africa and is rarely even superficially similar at most to GA.  Highly figured GA is hard to beat for beauty and is one of my two favorite woods.

Sorry, I had bad info.  Thought the difference was whether it was edge-grain or quarter-sawn.

African Zebrawood (like my Pearson) is Microberlinia bisulcata
vs. South American Zebrawood (aka "Goncalo Alves).  I will go apologize to my S&W.     ;)

Dopey me - I had a bad release.    :nono:    Like lots on the Internet - there are conflicting descriptions.

Not surprising many woods may have "Zebrawood" as another name.  I'm not the only one confused.
