Coyote Hunting

Hey guys hows it going, i'm new to the forum but i just love it. Here in wisconsin its starting snow again and i want to try to hunt some coyotes in my backyard my neighbor has a 6 acre field he allows me to hunt, and i was wondering what methods you guys have used to be successful with the yotes?

I haven't activly hunted coyotes with a bow, but I have shot them while I've been deer hunting. Got a nice one earlier this season just after sundown. If you are okay with baiting, you might try that and a predator call. If not, just sit over a game trail early and late and hope for the best. They are pretty cool and cagy critters though. Neat animals.

Yeah i thought it would be pretty interesting to try. Diddo i was able to shoot one out of the stand this season too, almost had it's sibling a few minutes later to boot! thanks for the advice ill have to try and see what works here, I've been seeing a huge fox every now and then as well

I wouldnt sit in the open bowhunting them, if you can hit a woods with a call that would be best for bowhunting, they seem to let their guard down a bit more in the woods because they feel more concealed. Not to say you couldnt kill one in the open with a bow, but calling they most generally always circle down-wind, and their eyesight is amazing, hope that helps and good luck!

Soon they will be howling looking for mates and you can use howler calls to be the girl stealer.

I love calling them. I've had most of my luck along a creek. They seem to like to travel along the creek in the winter. I find a high bank overlooking the creek and call. That seems to work well for me. Some kind of a decoy to take their focus off of you would be helpful.

I imagine putting out guts would do it. I have a friend who live traps hogs with corn. His corn started diaappearing with no hogs caught. He put up a camera to see that deer were eating the corn and then dandily jumping over. However, he says he has a picture of a coyote eating alongside the deer. I need to ask him how the coyote exited, but he is not one to make up stuff.

I have had several opportunities but never got the chance to shoot. Those critters are always spooky. I have never seen them let their guard down.

Like most calling situations, if you can hunt with someone else as the caller and set up 50 - 100 yds. downwind of the caller you'll have better opportunities. A decoy such as a scent free stuffed animal toy set in a conspicuous place also helps hold their attention as they get close. Song dogs are the most intuitive/cautious animal out there. Good luck.
