Push Pull on longbows. Stringer on recurves.

I bought my stringer from craig years ago, it works great, and it fit's the hill bows perfectly.  Darren

I'm too much of a weakling to use push-pull on my 75# Hill.

Push pull is not the same as step thru Ben. One hand on the grip-pull. Thumb and forefinger on either side of the string loop-push.

Actually, now that you mention it, I seem to recall Matt Kelly from Darwin using a leather belt around his ankle for such an operation.

None.  I absolutely despise bowstringers for longbows.  They work fine for recurves but for longbows, they seem slippy and very dangerous.

Okay, I tried the push-pull, and I don't stand a chance of winning without catastrophe. I think if a fellow did this sort of thing with lighter bows and worked up, it'd be a piece of cake; but starting with a 75# bow is hard. Not to worry, as Mr. Ekin will come to the rescue.

I thought that Ben should say that his bows are a bit stout for push pull stringing.I think it is dangerous for the man to string heavy LONGbows with the push/pull meathod. Hard to hurt a Howard Hill style bow this way but when you get your body all strung out on a heavy and long bow,and sinew/tendons starts to stretch. You might do a search Ben, seems I remember a build along for a simple stringer. BUT, it sounds like Craig will have you set up in jig time. best of luck.

I think you'd really have to work at it to twist a thick, relatively narrow limbed Hill style. I don't use a stringer on them.  We used to string 'em all, (recurves too), w/o stringers back in the day. I never twisted a single bow but there are enough twisted 'curves out there to remind us to use a stringer.  

I use the Black widow stringer for my Pete George longbow. In fact I use Black Widow  stringers for all my bows and each bow has a stringer. I have seen bows, recurve and longbows broke because the person did not do the push-pull method or the step through method correctly.
I do not like the type of stringer that has a cup on one end and a loop with a pad on the other. I almost lost an eye when the pad slipped on the limb. It did leave a mark on my head.

Neet makes one leather/suede cups, nylon cord. Fit perfectly on the heavier Hills, use it reversed on lighter ones. Not sure of the weight spec but have not broke it on my 75#er.
