several years ago my grand pa gave me a bear polar long bow. at the time it was to heavy of a draw and shot it bad so i hang it up.

my other grand pa gave me the bear kodiak he had and it was a lighter weight so i have been shooting that for a few years and like it. but seems like i cant get very accurate at the same time and arrows drop faster.

so after going through this longer length might not be good for me thing i remembered the bear polar is 64" and around the same weight of the bow i ordered. I took it out and strung her up.  went out side and took some shots and holy crap its accurate. the weight feels perfect and its so stabile. within 10 minutes of shooting it i was hitting water bottles at 15yds almost every shot or right next to it.  at 20 i wasnt do horrible ethier. really suprised me how well i  shot this bow and how little drop the arrow had qt 20 yds compared to the kodiak. i just eye balled the nock point as well. think i might really like the 66" bow i have coming in.

ya haha. all worrys are gone and im happy as hack. the build should start this week (paypal check has to clear still) and i cant wait!!!!  just have to start ordering all the other stuff i need. have an idea on where to start withthe arrows and stuff.

also withthe longer bow it felt easier to keep a consisant anchor point which i seem to have a little trouble with on the 60" kodiak recurve

Longer length in a bow is inherently good for shooting characteristics and inherently bad for hunting in confined spaces. Everything in life is a trade off and a compromise. If you get the chance someday, try shooting some of the bows that are designed to be short and still shoot well. The vintage Bear bows you are comparing were not designed to shoot well at shorter lengths. On the other hand, Howard Hill always professed that he had never shot a short bow that would shoot nearly as well as a longer bow and advised everyone against shooting the short ones. While I am not a competent enough archer to disagree with Howard Hill on that subject, I would observe that Howard never shot the newer, short designs of some bows that are being made today. There is still no doubt that the longer bows tend to be inherently more stable and more accurate. You only need to see what bows are winning all the target competitions to be convinced of the advantages of a longer bow. So, if you are planning to be a target shooter, the longer bow will probably be better for you. For hunting, absolute accuracy is not always paramount and other factors come into play which may favor a shorter length bow.

Since I have a 30" draw length, I'm a big fan of 66" recurves especially if the bow has a 19" riser with 23.5" limbs which my two recurves do. I'm very accurate with them. Of course, the low poundage of the bows I shoot comes into play as well.

I think you bow fits into the category that I label as "longcurves" and they are about as sweet as sweet can be.

They feel and shoot like a little longbow with a little zip added with the tips.

Congratulations!!

If you are worried about hunting with a longer bow then consider a tree saddle. You will not have a platform to worry about or any other constrictions below you. I shot a deer with my 64" Howard Hill this year while hunting in my tree saddle. I'm now considering a 66" or even a 68" Howard Hill because I am no longer convinced I have to have a short bow to hunt with.

funny you mention that. i have been looking for a new set up since my climber isnt good for the areas i hunt I have pretty much settled on the saddle.  for my area the saddle and 5 lone wolf sticks would be perfect for me. light wait for steep land i hunt and can be used on like any tree.  hear it can be pretty uncomfortable if you dont have the knee pads and a good base but i only hunt like 4-6 hrs at a time and can suck it up

I also use 5 LW sticks and knee pads. The knee pads are a must. I hunt the mountains of WV and have some long hikes and this system has worked the best for me. I do get uncomfortable after about 4 hours but I get that way in any treestand. I hope you enjoy your new bow. If you have any questions about how I use the saddle, shoot me a PM.

I forgot to mention that I find I need good ankle support from lace up boots when I use my Saddle. Otherwise, your ankles will get sore since you use your feet to move around with.
