Hey fellows I need your advice.I would like to try and get started back in tradional archery.I tried to last year but got injured at work nerve and disc damage in my back sidelined me for several months. So now the quest begins (again). My first question is would you suggest a longbow or recurve is one easier to lean over the other or does it matter? My passion is deer and turkey hunting if that helps choosing between the two.I am considering a bow from Mike at Maddog archery he offers a midsize longbow and recurve at a very reasonable price for someone like me just getting started. My drawlength is 26inches so I was considering a bow 45 pounds at 28 inches to keep the poundage light till I learn good form. Or would you suggest less poundage? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am pretty new myself, so I am not gonna be much help on which style of bow to choose. What I noticed that I might be able to help you with is to make sure to check and see if your state has draw weight limits for deer. I know when I lived in Colorado they had to be at least 45 pounds. Also consult a physical therapist to see about some good exercises to strengthen trouble areas. This can help alot. Best of luck getting back into it.

I'm fairly new at this also, and I have a long bow ordered from Mike at Maddog. I went with the long bow cause their supposed to be a little quieter than a recurve. Ive been using a Bear recurve loaned to me by my brother the last couple years and its about the same length as Mikes midsize recurve. Your reasons for choosing 45 lbs. sounds reasonable to me. After not shooting bows for over 40 years except one season with training wheels Ive really enjoyed getting back into it. I would encourage you to go for it.

An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.

Good luck with your recovery and quest.  I started back with a recurve, and have switched to a longbow recently.  I found the thinner handle of the longbow to be a bit more finicky than the thicker recurve handle.  It makes me focus more on my form and proper release.  So I guess I found the recurve to be easier to learn with.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Thanks everyone for the nice replies.Rob that link you gave me is great for someone like myself just beginning.I think maybe I will start with a bow in the 30 to 35 pound range till I gain good form and and get adjusted to shooting trad gear then work my way up to a little heavier poundage for deer and turkey hunting.I know I posted earlier my drawlength was 26 inches thats just a rough guess is there anyway to determine my correct drawlength and also what arrows should I use? I would like to stay with carbons since they are easily found at the local archery shop.I'm not looking for anything expensive just some good practice arrows thanks again fellows.
