I've never gone out and roamed the woods stumpin' and would love to go out with my son after the hunting seasons end. This might be a dumb question, but where do you guys do it at? I guess I wonder if the game commission would have an issue with you walking around the woods with bow and arrow outside of any legal hunting season? Can you go stumpin' on public land or do you hafta have some private land to do it on? Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas!

I was once told by a game official public land is for hunting not shooting. That's Ohio though. Check with a local farmer and tell him your intentions and see what they say.

Our small game and coyote seasons run pretty well through the winter.  If were out stumping I would also look for small game that was in season.  So I guess it would be legal for me to be in the woods with a bow and arrow. I have some private land that I go to.

My back woodlot.  State lands.  An old abandoned field archery site.  Neighbor's acerage.

Bast spots are those that were logged 20 years ago or prior.  Old pine stumps are best.

Anywere you have access to enough acreage to amble along killing dirt clods, flowers, sticks, beer cans, clumps of leaves on bushes, etc. at varying distances. I stopped shooting actual stumps which some are arrow killers.

I do it on public reservoir property which you are allowed to bowhunt on.  I make sure I have my permit, hunting license, a broadhead or two in the quiver and if stopped I'd say I'm groundhog hunting.

Make sure you are properly licensed and hunt whatever is in season. For NC, coyote is never out of season.

You live in PA like me. Coyote season is 365 days a year. As long as you have a license on your back, there is your excuse. I never get hassled.

Here in Michigan you need a hunting license in order to shoot a bow on public land. Stumping is the best practice IMO.

I stump shoot year-round. Best not to carry broadheads with you if it's not hunting season or if you are not licensed.

Have never been bothered by anyone. Mainly because shooting a bow is so quiet and you are in the bushes to begin with. I can't remember the last time anyone even saw me that I'm aware of.

Target shoot with firearms, bows and arrows, or devices capable of launching projectiles in a manner that could cause injury to persons or property, or on areas posted closed to those activities.

So my take on it is if you are doing it safely, and not shooting at and damaging live trees, you should be good to go.  And as Jerry said, throw your hunting license on your back and you are legally hunting coyotes.

yeah. I stump shoot a lot too. Mainly with my dad. We just like to get out, see some cool stuff, and take some interesting shots. It helps you get away fro the same old target in the yard. lol.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Looks like I'll throw my license on my back and just get ready to hunt some 'yotes! (havent heard of many, if any down here in Lancaster Co., but you never know when/where one could appear, right?    

I think stumping is right next to sex as far as fun goes. Lasts longer also. I stump on public land both state and fed. We have lots of old stumps that are probably over 100 years old and just right for a blunt arrow. I always carry a broadhead just in case and never worry about any hassle from the law. My bow isn't a conceled weapon so I don't worry about any weapon laws cause out here there arn't any to my knowledge. Frank
