I read on here about people wanting to head out west to chase mulies,elk,moose and so on. I see how so many tradgangers save and plan for months if not years to make the trip. I have been lucky to have chase many western big game animals even harvested a few of them. I have a differant dream hunt than most but the whitetail deer has my emagination. Don't get me wrong I would not hesitate to go on a wilderness caribou hunt if had the money but a DIY whitetail hunt could happen more often. I don't know if its because there is so much liticher on whitetails or if it's because their not were I live but I want to hunt them bad. I think about hunting them alot and have been putting in some research on tactics and places to hunt the last few years. I even see the appeal to hunt heavy hunted public land. If you what to throw in your 2 cents about hunting them,pictures,ideas,favorite states/places or just how passionate you feel about whitetails, feel free to chime in. Thankyou for any replys it will help with the day dreaming.

Stay in the "western" part of the country for good whitetail hunting. I have hunted whitetails in quite a few states, and for public land hunting i think it is hard to beat the Dakotas, Nebraska, or eastern Wyoming and Montana. There are plenty of nice bucks in these areas, plus these deer dont see half the pressure that the midwest and eastern deer do. Just find a good wooded creek bottom in these states and you will find whitetails.

You are welcome to come hunt with or without me here in Missouri anytime you have the urge.

Our out of state tags aren't ridiculously priced and we have a good whitetail herd. I can put you in some prime whitetail woods(public land) Your big concern would be not getting run over by longbeards...lol (that's turkeys, not old men)

sounds like fun in missouri!  Long beards and deer?  what could be any better?  

I only live in IL  :(   Ha ha just kidding...the midwest is amazing but public land hunting can be hard...I do have a friend that got 2 bucks in 3 minutes and 2 doe another weekend in 5 minutes in public land...both weekends were back to back this year!

Oh I also have another friend who has killed 3 deer on public land this year.  one was 2 minutes after he got out of his car...he saw a deer walking a trail towards him...put down his climber and shot the deer at 5 yards as he crossed the trail he was on.

Life is grand!  Public land is not that bad!

Ohio has really good public hunting ground. Tags are over the counter. East and south east Ohio are the areas you should look into. IMHO.

Thanks Mudd I may take you up on it someday but then you would have to come out and chase elk thought the steep lava fields.... lol.
