All,

Have been looking through some of the arrow crest threads and first thing I have to say is there are definetly some artists out there.

I saw a few arrow that have a swirly, marbled, mottled (heck I dont know what you call it) cap/crown dip.  I am curious what is it really called and what are the steps and materials necessary to pull it off.  I really like the look and it is unique

I too would like to see it done. From what I gather the dip is a mix of water based and oil based paint.  They don't mix so you get the marbling effect.  Would someone please post the steps taken to achieve this look?

I have tried a method with mixed results.
I used oil-based paints dripped into a container of water deep enough for the crown of the arrow.
the oil-based paints are swirled together with a toothpick and the arrow is pushed down through the paint. Once the dip is deep enough the shaft is drawn back out.
The paints gave a really nice swirl effect but I had issues with water bubbles in the finish. Someone who does this regularly probably has ways to combat it. I ended up not pursuing the finish further because the oil-based paints are not compatible with the gasket lacquer I use as a clear finish. I wasn't interested at that time in finding another clear finish that would work.

What Grey said, Caleb,

fill dip tube w/ water. Put in a base color of oil paint...use eye dropper to put in other colors to suit, swirl very little and gently with tooth pick.

Dip shaft. I understand you only get  to dip one or two, maybe 3 shafts and you have to dump it all and start over.

Air bubbles would be another story... stir gently? Dunno.

I have a good friend who gets the marbled look by pouring the paint on a sponge, and then rolling the shaft over it.  He has made several dozen for my wife, and they are really good looking.  Sorry, but I have no idea how to post pictures.

I cheat. I spray paint in one color, and while that paint is still wet, I paint over it with another color while turning the shaft. Works great.

I am still working on this project.  I did get some pictures taken last night but the cold weather doesnt allow the paint to dry quite as fast as it does in the summer.  So with one more coat to go on the crown dip Ill hopefully be able to finish up the project tonight.  And be posting pictures tomorrow.
