I can hunt on the creek bank in my backyard. The biggest live deer I've ever seen in KY was 92 yards from my deck.  However, I hunt about 1/2 mile from my property on an adjacent farm or on 16 acres my son owns adjacent to my property.

When I hunt with my friend in IN, 2-3 times per year I travel 243 miles one-way.

The best place I ever had to hunt was 50 miles, each way from North Liberty, IN to Elkhart, IN.  I would average ab out 60 trips a year to that spot in Elkhart in those days -- too many and too far.

Drove 22 hours one way to hunt bear last spring.  It was L-O-N-G ways, and I decided not to shoot a badly rubbed bear... but it was worth it!

Only 5500 miles to arrive in Colorado and then some more 5 hours to my camp, then 3 hours from the trailhead. It takes me almost 5 days since I leave my home. Then a little bit more coming back.

Some hunts...15 min./ others 1 hour 10 min. about 1 1/2 hours is the farthest. If I do go farther its for more time like 3-4 days.

Live a mile off the road. Just walk to a stand or blind. I am so blessed, and spoiled to.

I got the following.

38 acres  1 mile
33 acres 2 miles
52 acres 17 miles
160 acres 22 miles
20 acres 24 miles

Lots of public hunting about 5 miles. Depends where you want to hunt on it.

i made sure that i would live and raise my family in the country so that it wasen't that far for hunting, fishing and any other outdoor activity. i hunt out my backdoor most of the time, and can drive no more than a 1/2 hour to several public hunting grounds around me. we all make choices in life, i prefer the country life. i even had one treestand that i named '' the mailbox stand'' and it was about 20 yds. from my mailbox.

Bledsoe National Forrest is 1/10th of a mile from my driveway.  It's several thousand acres and I can't tell you how great that is!

I have killed Mule deer, Whitetail and Black bear on my property. For Moose my favorite spot is a half hour drive or boat ride. And I am surrounded by literally millions of acres of public land full of game. But if I want to hunt Turkey it is 12 hours driving at least!! I am blessed. Bob

I am a bit spoiled I guess, I can literaly slip out the back door and be on private land within 50 yards! There is a nice woods back there owned by a neighbor who tells me to treat it like  it was mine.

There are 3 other public land areas within a 3o minute drive.

I can drive or walk a mile down the road and be on a great public fish and wildlife area as well. That property was the main selling point when I bought the new house. Perfect access!

And to top it off I can be in Indiana on private land with less than a 20 minute drive! Even better I bought a lifetime license for Indiana way back when I lived there so the tags are free!

With all those places close to home i still drive a couple hours a few times a year to hunt with freinds and family.

I drove a 1000 miles one way this year. That was only half way across our state. I hope that makes you feel better.  :bigsmyl:

Huntschool

Grew up on 140 ac in NE Jersey back in the day when ya could hunt... Could walk out door and hunt.

Went to school and ended up here in Southern Illinois.  Can walk out door or go 5 min down the road to my other property or neighbors places.  Shawnee NF is all around me interspaced by crop farms.  Its a hunters dream.
