Hey guys Ive been looking at the Great plans traditional longbow and just wanted to hear your opinions? Anyone know if the shelf is cut past center?

I had a Great Plains longbow,and it was a fine shooting bow,smooth and as quick as my other longbows.The shelf is not cut past center,the riser is not large enough.Loved the grip on the one I had,but I just do too much trading at times.It was a milder R/D that gives a nice D-shape when strung,I like that.

Do any longbows really offer a cut past center shelf?

Most traditional looking longbows are cut just short of center but you can find takedowns like Bob Lee or A&H cut to or past center. Being cut past center doesn't give you a better line on the target all things considered so I would'nt base my entire choice on it.

I like mine, smooth as butter.  It's a great bow.
No problems with mine.

Lot's of longbows are cut to center.  Like was said above, A & H archery longbows are cut past center as are Eaglewing longbows (both are sponsors here. i'm sure there are probably others, but those two i know about.

Does that mean i would need slightly lower spinned arrows with most look bows?

Ari, are you talking about strictly slight reflex deflex d shape when strung longbows?

I used this Great Plains longbow as my "back-up" bow on my west hunt this year. It ended up being my go-to bow! I bought it used on this site with skins already applied. It didn't do too bad    I think I am gonna sell it and get one just a tad lighter. All in all a good solid 3 piece that shoots where you look!

Possibly depending on what spine you are used to shooting. My Greay Northern Fireball shoots a range of spines accurately, I can barely tell a difference from 55# to 70#. If arrows spine too low you can build out the stike plate. You can usually go pretty high in spine before it becomes detrimental to accuracy. The main thing is that your arrows be properly matched, you will compensate from various sets as long as all arrows in your current set shoot the same.

Great plains makes a great longbow, with any bow, it really doesn't matter if it's cut to center or not, because you are going to tune the arrows to shoot properly out of that particular bow.
To do this, you can use different spines of arrows til you find the correct one, you can use different weight points to make the shaft act weaker or stiffer, and you can use the bow's brace heigth as well.

What do you think of black widows limbs compared to great plains, they look a little thiner and wider, still strong and long lasting?
