Great thread. I hunt, fish, trap, camp, just about anything you want to do can be done out of a canoe.

Cool pirogue.  You probably need a boat to hunt in Louisiana.

Yes, that was a two week moose Hunt in AK.

The oar locks were, as we said in my military days, a "field expedient".  The raft  was a new one bought locally prior to the trip.  Part of the deal was that the seller would ship it to our outfitter.

When we met the outfitter it turned into a speed drill to pull our gear (previously shipped by us) and the raft out of storage and loaded into super cubs because of weather closing in.  The raft had been poorly packed and apparently the locks slid out a break in the packing.  We didn't realize it until we were sitting on the island sand bar where we were dropped.

So, the oar locks were fashioned from some stout alder which grows everywhere along the rivers.

That's a "neutral" bent paddle. Saves your shoulders if you are paddlin long distance! Promise. On a fishin day I can cover a lot of miles.

saves your shoulders but especially your wrists. ergonomics- in fact they work better if they have about a 5 degree feather in them, as that is the natural rotation the shaft undergoes if yo are using a proper torso twist whilst paddling. but they are certainly the greatest new advent to paddling!!!

cool story monteray- did you get a moose. i am doing a 2 week moose/ canoe paddle trip this fall in northern bc!

monterey

No, we did not get any game except spruce hens.   :)

We had some great fishing though.  You would think after two weeks one would be ready to get back to civilization, but I'd a been happy to spend another two weeks on the river.

Where in BC?

Looking to get a sit-on-top kayak for some bowfishing this summer. Anyone tried this?

They make sit-on-tops that you can stand up in. I was looking real hard at a  Jackson Kilroy, but didn't want that much weight for what I intended.

I like fishing from a canoe, and double-ended paddles so I got an Old Town NEXT.

Killy, I'm looking to purchase an Old Town NEXT. how do you like yours and did you get the double ended paddle? The NEXT was high on my list because (according to what I read) it has the qualities of a kayak with the open space of a canoe. This would be my first canoe and I'm really looking forward to getting on the water this summer. If you're coming to the BBTC this year I'd like to run you down and chew your ear (not literally of course    :D )   on the NEXT.
