Of all the wool I own, none of it is windproof.  What are some "thin" options to wear under my KOM, Columbia, or Asbell stuff?

November 30, 2010
After posting that message above I got my hands on one of Teresa Asbell's windproof vests and is it ever wonderful.

I was actually walking from my house to deer hunt on a really windy day when I found it in the mailbox.  I put it on and saw a huge difference with the wind not cutting through my KOM pullover getting to me.

Being a police officer the UA is great warmth for high activity (softball, SWAT training, or under my bullet proof vest), but sitting still and keeping the wind off me it does not do.  This fleece fits EXACTLY what I was looking for...I don't have to buy a new wardrobe of windproof garments and can use it as the weather dictates.

I really like the under armor stuff.  Expensive but works great

I've seen posts on here where guys have had good luck with the golf shirts that are wind barriers. I have an old original Scent Lok green two piece set that I think sucks as a Scent Blocker but it is a great wind blocker....light weight and very quiet.

Bought sme "Starter" unders at Wal---- works like UA but costs LESS. Use Cabelas legacy fleece (would rather solid or plaid) with windstop pullover under wool! Worked in Colorado at 17deg and 20mph wind. Wool outers still the ticket over all the new stuff for me.

Just look at wind shirts for golf at a local store (or on the web), they're all probably on sale now too.

I have one of cabelas wool sweaters with windstop, makes a big difference when really windy and cold. Otherwise several thinner layers of wool work just fine.

My son plays baseball all year long, and him and all the players wear Under Armour Cold Gear in the cold weather.  It's microfiber outside and somewhat fleecy inside.  Is fleecy a word?  He says it cuts the wind good.  I paid $55 for the shirt a year ago.

I have a Cabelas windproof sweater, but it has to be pretty cold to wear it. Got another one at Bass Pro that is a bit lighter. Both really cut the wind.

Check out bicycling gear.  There are many brands of wind resistant longhandles and shirts that are made for bicyclists.  I have longhandles and a vest that were advertised for bicyclers I use for hunting.  They are quiet and effective and the price is right.  Insport is a brand that I like.

Ligh weight silk over light weight merino wool. Ibex or Smartwool make good light wool and Cabela'a sells silk. Lets you play with the layers without hardly any physical weight.

I agree with Bill Carlsen and Mr. Magoo on the Wind Shirts. I ride a motorcycle all year they really stop the wind.

It was me who posted I wear golf windshirts under wool.

Geezer, does the silk stop the wind? Hadn't heard that before.
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

My Army issue silk weights do a great job under my KOM and Asbel wool. Ours are made by polartec.

The problem is that you really want to stop the wind on the OUTSIDE, so it doesn't compromise the insulation provided by your wool.

I love wool, but it's just not the right tool for the job in seriously windy, cold environments.  You can dress a lot lighter in something windproof.

Sitka gear has a complete line of wind stop clothing.

I higly recomend going the golf shirt/pants route.

Stop at any Goodwill or secondhand store and most of the time you will find racks of them for just a buck or two.

I recently bought a wind-shirt black pullover with mock turtle type neck from Eastern Mountain Sports.  They are designed for a snug fit and a little stretchy so I got it one size up and it layers nicely over long underwear and under the wool shirt. The thing that I like about this item is that it is soft (not fleecy) and quiet, unlike some of the stiffer harder surfaced items.

What I CAN'T seem to find is the equivalent item in PANTS.  I would love to find a "long underwear" style wind pant that would fit over my wool underwear and  under my wool pants.

Any ideas?

Our local Dick's sporting goods store has wind shirts on sale now.  Just picked one up.  Was $50., and I paid $30.

I have a vest that I wear when I run. It is a wind breaker type material and keeps the wind from my chest and I stay warm.
