I'll be leaving on Thursday to start my annual Wisconsin hunt. The days always seem to drag right before I leave on this trip. It's for sure a hunt I look forward to all year.

Have any of you been hunting in WI? Any reports on what the deer are doing would be appreciated.

I'll be hunting near Pardeeville which isn't too far from Portage, I believe.

Thanks,
CJ

CJ,

I hunted there about 2 weeks ago. Probably 50 miles from Portage. It was abnormally warm, I saw 3 raccoons. 1 doe and one reallly nice buck. The doe winded me and the buck never offered a shot. :readit:

I hunted this past weekend northwest of where you will be.  First couple days were kind of slow, but yesterday morning I had a really nice 9 point at 20 yards but no shot.  Seems like yesterday the action picked up in advance of the wind we are having now.
Bucks are tailing does, and things are picking up.  I've always felt that Halloween was my favorite weekend of the fall.  Your timing is perfect!

The wind should be out of here by then as well. Good luck.

I hunt north of you by Stevens Point and last friday was the best day hunting I have had in a while. Between my self and my wife (she was in the camper)we saw at least 20 different deer. Had a 2 1/2 year old buck chasing a doe by me and in a span of 21 minutes I got pics of 3 differnt bucks on my trail cam. The rut is on. Good luck and be sure to let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the reports guys. I think I will have internet access so I'm going to try and post a daily report of the hunt. Hopefully I'll have enough sightings and encounters to make it worthwhile!!

We've had the bucks chasing in central Wi. My sister in law got an 8 last week that was dogging a doe. When this wind slows on Friday it should be all out go getm.

MAT

Well good luck. A lot of us have given up on our home state becuase of baiting.  This is very much the case further north.  I was at our camp last weekend and gave it another try.  Plenty of sign, never saw a deer.  They will move a bit more during the rut.

I have deer tags for WY and ND this year.  Another buddy from Green Bay who has land up north drives all the way to IL to hunt deer.  I never thought I'd see the day IL would be the better place to hunt!

scbowhnter

MAT,

That is a bad deal. To date I have not experienced anything but wonderful hunts in WI...actually better than my IL hunts. And I'm certainly not hunting anything but a friends, small private land and some leased property. Perhaps my luck will run out this year. But then I live in SC and it would have to be pretty crappy to not be better than here!!!:0)

I have to agree with MAT, baiting has totally destroyed deer hunting in the north. I hunt 4-5 times a week on 330 acres of private land and I haven't seen a buck yet this season. As a matter of fact my three trail cameras have taken pictures of two fork horns and a eight point, all at night, since August. I'm surrounded by "hunters" (and I use the term loosely) who bait, training the deer to be nocturnal. You don't know how lucky you are if you hunt in an area where baiting is prohibited.

Was up in the Spooner area last week and even though the area has a lot of deer, most of the activity was in the dark.  It was still better than working though.

Jason R. Wesbrock

I hunt a little south of Portage. Last weekend I ended up filling another turkey tag and a one for an antlerless deer. Hopefully this weekend will be good, because I'm heading back up there Friday. Almost all of the corn is out, and deer activity should be good.

inn8hunter

I'm in trempeleau county and the reports are that the big guys are starting to chase. Weather will be good this weekend. It is gonna be a good weekend once the wind calms down.

doubleo

I hunt in Sheboygan county and it has been pretty slow.Last year i only saw 3 bucks. I'll be going down to Grant Cty. with my son for about 5 days. Dale, good luck to you and Knobby up north.

I live/hunt in Jefferson county and the deer population is way down from what it used to be. The DNR has so many seasons, supposedly to combat CWD that there aren't many deer around and those that are are mostly nocturnal. Everyone I talk to says the same thing for most of the state, of course there are still a few good areas.

Hey Otto, Good to hear from you. Good luck to you and your son on your hunt. Broke out the wool this morning so I guess that means I'm ready for the rut.

Jim Rocole

Lot of daytime activity the past week by me. This should get the juices flowing.

I hunted in WI once. Way up on Superior in the Ashland, Bayfield area. That was alot of years ago. Saw some real monsters come out of there. I just got some freezer meat.
