I just picked up a Kobalt fold out utility knife, and was wondering if anyone has cleaned game with something like that. Did it work OK?

I have a hunting knife too of course, but I thought you could do a lot of the skinning with utility knife. Switching the blades on these things is really easy, so no sharpening.

Yep. I have a folder too. I use it after a deer or hog is hung up to open up to the breast bone and down the legs.  Then switch to a longer blade knife for the skinning and breastbone. Try it.

I'll give it a try. I don't know how they make these things so cheap. They seem really well made.

take a look at the havalon knives, they are small hunting utility knives. i have the orange one and love it. apparently, they have become very popular out west.

I have a Lenox brand.  It is pretty good for skinning, but I prefer a blade with a rounded end for sweeping cuts.

yes I do all my fur cut swith a replaceable blade Knife because cutting the hair is the hardest on the knife blade. I use a havalon and love it.

I know there is a market for them but I dislike them as they are inferior to a real knife in everyway especially in sharpness. You never cut across hair, which is where most people dull their knives, when cleaning an animal if you cut from the inside out.

Those Havalons look pretty neat. But not nearly as cheap. lol I think the fold out I got was $8 and it came with several replacement blades.

I can see how a rounded blade could be better for a lot of things though. I'll see how it goes.

The carpet or shingle hook blades are great for first cuts when skinning. Zips a critter open in seconds.

Folks on the Alaska forums are gaga over the Havalon.

I use scissors, tin snips, pruners, and utility knives sometimes.

Mostly for small game, and all the critters I trap!

Love my Helle. I have the safari model.

I have a folding knife that take the same replaceable scalpel blades I use at work and they have a rounded tip and it works great,But safety is a must when using it. And carpet blades for sheetrock knives (utility razor knives) have the rounded edges.they are great as well.

Havalon knives are great. I have been using them for several years now and love them. The blades only cost about .25 a piece and are extremely sharp. I used three blades skinning and quartering an elk and I am not very gentile with blades.
