i know i seen it somewhere on here but couldn't find it  but isn't there a lb per strand of string for rule of thumb to making string i have made my own string and i believe mine is a 14 strand . have been seeing a little fray at the loop sides and will be making another but i can't rem for sure.
i am using b-50 string mat for a long bow .

12 strands is good for anything up to 50#. I shoot 50, mostly, but prefer a 14 strand string just for the diameter of the finished string.

i shoot a 12 strand on my 53# and a 14 or 16 on my 67#. Never had any problems. My strings usualy last a full year without any fray. I keep them waxed, though.

I shoot 8 strand D97 on my 55# Firefly.

I'm still a little old school in that I still use B50 for my strings & I usually make mine for the bows in my sig line with 12 strands & like bornagainbowhunter they usually last over a year for me.

12 is fine. Do you shoot without serving? If so, a 14 strand will be just a tad thicker depending on what nocks you use. It may fit the nocks better. I like serving at the arrow nock point to beef up the string and make it more durable. Just enough for split finger shooting and nock height adjustments.

I use 12 strand B50 on my old recurves and serve to fit my nocks.  They're all around 60# at 30+"

my long bow is right at 87 lbs at my draw lenght of 31 inches .
and yes i do serve the nock area just like you said for nck adjustment and for my split finger style of shooting .

but what i ment is there like a rule of thumb like 1 strand of b50 will hold 1o lbs and so on so you put 10 strands together to hold 100 lbs .
i don't think the numbers are right but just using that as an example .

Only a year for a string. I'm trying to think if I ever wore one out. I do keep it waxed good. And I shoot a lot. I do have to reserve. Gary

Yeah, about a year.  It is probably not worn to break, but it is getting fuzzy at the loops.

I don't know about strands per pound, but 12 strands to about 55# and 14 strands to about 70#.

10 strands of B-50 will handle most anything anyone could shoot. They want to protect their butts so always recommend more than ya need. I shot 10 strand out of all my bows up to 70#s. Shawn

with 87 lbs you might want to look into some fastflight or get a rope.

Not sure about b-50 but b55 is rated at 14lbs per strand I think.

well it started like this it was my first tri-lam bow build and me being me ( so smart an manly) i didn't purchaxce the small 6.00 book with the helpful instructions . but with that being said this bow is quiet as a mouse very little if no hand shock and has scored a kill for me this year i am happy .
but just what kind of rope would you suggest stickhead lol.

just playing on that part but maybe i shouldn't say fray just fuzzy and do you remove your string from the bow to wax the string . and do you use the string makers wax or should i switch to a regular bow wax?

gosh guess 1 questions leads to another  sorry but if i don't ask i don't know .

The reason I was saying fast flight is it is like 10 or 20 times stronger than b50 and the only reason for the amount of strands on it is just to get it big enough.but if it is that quite I know you would hate to change but if you start getting to many strands of b50 it will get to big anyway what I'm getting at is you can use 60/40 b50 and fast flight Mike Treadway makes a string like this he calls his hunting strings because the b50 quites them down.as far as wax any kind is better than none I put it on with the bow strung and use beeswax with it I put it on with my fingers then take a small piece of leather and work it in really good with you want to build up some heat to get it into the string.

right now i have 14 strands of b50 on there and with the serving on seems to be a good fit for the bow and the nocks  with out any mods.

but i like to try new and differant things thats what i like about this kind of stuff alwways can be a change .
