Im gettn a new recurve soon.just gettn a lower priced one right now to get started.was looking at a couple,wondering if any of you guys have or are using them?One is a PSE Blackhawk recurve.its a 60".other one is a Martin x-150,also a 60" bow.any info would be appreciated,thanks,Ross

thanks Widow.is there any particular samic bow that you could recommend?im tryn to stay right around $200-240 right now.seems to be hard to find a good bow at that price range though.

look at the one called samick sage.119.99 dollers from the three rivers catalog.it is a 62" take-down recurve.i have heared people say it is a good value for the money.good luck,steve

i have owned an older model blackhawk
and really didnt care for it seemed like i was shootin a 2x4.
never shot a martin
the samick bows are a great value
i have the sage and use it for bowfishing all summer  its a good bow at a very reasonable price

GWC, I second the classified ads.  Alot of good buys on bows there.  

What is your draw length?  If its over 30" you might want to look at a 62" or 64" bow.

Sometimes you can pick up a used Damon Howatt Hunter in that price range. They are 62" so are a bit forgiving on the full draw. Fantastic bow for a mass production. Very traditional looking too, nice woods. What weight do you pull?

You will thank yourself over and over if you don't acquire your 1st bow over 45#'s at your draw length.

Also, you may find that you may never wish to go above 45#'s. Many skilled archers and hunters on TG shoot less than 45#'s.

The lower wait will be more enjoyable, more likely to allow you to develop form and will take most critters.

Friend is right on, so is YORNOC,  I bought a lightly used #45 Damon Howatt Hunter on TG classifieds for $225 and a #40 York tracker for $125.  These bows shoot great and I can see now reason to go up in weight for hunting around here.

Agree with the classifieds. A great used bow can have had for that kind of money. Checkmate Falcon is one to look for

 Where are you located on the Eastern Shore? I live in Dorchester close to Cambridge,Preston,Hurlock...I have a Browning recurve that is 50# I'll let go reasonable...I also have a nephew who has a Martin and Bear Montana he wants to sell that might fit the bill...

The PSE Blackhawk takedown was/is an import. They should be 2" longer than the previous model sold by Hoyt called the "Huntmaster" (back in the mid 80's). Huntmasters pretty much slammed the wall when drawn to 29".

Samick offers the same looking bow now, can't remember the new model name. They either made the older ones for the other guys or are making a copy.

The Blackhawk types of bows IMHO are better for bowfishing, as they have bushings, are set up for an elevated rest. The shelf is not radiused for that type of shooting, although you could put a rug on it and blast away.

But IMHO there are bows better built for such style, will keep the arrow in closer proximity to your hand for faster/easier sight picture learning.

Nothing wrong with the old takedown PSE blackhawk, had a Huntmaster yrs ago. They make decent intro bows because one can try sights, rests etc.

But once you decide on a specific style you'll probably not like having a rig that's in the middle.
