I bought the Grizzly Razor Sharp systems. When I first got them I sharpened my Abowyer single bevel heads razor sharp. I then tried an old rusty zwickey double bevel. I got it razor sharp also. I got the Abowyers sharp with just the jewelers rouge. The zwickey I had to hit with the grit wheel two passes on each side, then just the jewelers rouge.

Someone asked if I would sharpen some Simmons heads for them. I got one razor sharp. I tried another and nothing. I tried to touch up the sharpened Simmons and dulled it. I tried all weekend to get these heads sharp. I thought maybe it was the heads. I tried another zwickey and the same thing. It wouldn't sharpen it. I tried to touch the zwickey that was sharpened and the same thing happened. I dulled it on the wheel with the jewelers rouge.

Am I missing something with this system? Are you supposed to do something to the wheeels between uses?

I know I must be doing something wrong here since many people have used the same wheels for years.

Gil, how is the grit on the grit wheel?  It lasts a while, but when it gets thin, that will happen.  Also, are you using excessive wax?

It may be the wax on the grit wheel, but the rouge wheel not only doesn't sharpen but dulls. Is it possible to have too much rouge on that wheel? Is is smooth as silk.

Is there anything I can do to get it back to where it was? I was wondering if heat on the wax on the grit wheels would do it.

I saw where Centaur has one and he squares it up with a file and sandpaper, would that get me back to where I was with it?

I am more surprised about the rouge. That wheel by it self sharpened 6 heads razor sharp.

OH OH I just ordered one yesterday.

I took care of the problem. I had too much wax on the grit wheel. I used one of the stone wheels I took off the grinder to get the wax off. Plus these heads with a concave blade are hard to sharpen due to the width of the wheel and shape of the blade. If you have the simmons or centaur get the 1/2 wheels.

Also I wouldn't use much wax if any on the grit wheel. On single bevel heads there is not much need to use the grit wheel, just the polishing wheel. On straight double bevel you need to set the angle with the grit wheel then polish.

I am back in business. You will be too if you get one.

I use mine for everything, hunting knives,kitchen knives, butcher knives, single bevel BHs, double bevel BHs, fillet knives! the grit doesn't last a real long time and you have to resurface it, very easy to do! very little pressure is needed to sharpen anything, too much pressure could heat things up and change the hardness of your steel! Go lite on the wax for the grit wheel and lite on the rouge for the polishing wheel!

Another tip is remember these type sharpening wheels are just for "touch ups". They are not for grinding a considerable amount of metal off your tool. If i have to Re-Bevel a head or several, i will use a quality knife sharpner like KME or quality file. Then i'll Touch up or polish on the Razor Sharp system. Yes , you can grind a new bevel but you will at one point have to re-grit the wheel more often than just using it for touch ups.  i very rarely have to re-bevel any of my Silver Flames or ABS Samuris..I just touch them up on the wheel...........so in short do not use wheels to grind if you can help it...just polish...

Makes sense to me, joebuck, I'll remember that when I start using mine (finally - LOL), and use my KME first.

Joebuck may have it. Touchups are very sensitive. It's simply straightening the razor edge. Too much pressure will bend the burr to the opposite side. ANY "S" in the edge is dull. Not familiar w/Grizz Sharpening. Is it a flat stone mechanical system or electric wheels?
