I'm looking at picking up a couple of wool shirts for all the usual reasons. Besides I like 'em.

Some of my hunting is in colder weather in a treestand in interior BC. It could be 20F or colder. I'll usually jam out at -20F or -25F.

I also hunt on the wet coast, often in wet weather and anywhere from 20F to 60F.

I like the longhunter because it's long, and wool. For those of you that hunt with it what are your recommendations re the above conditions? How does it compare with a mackinaw. How heavy does it get when wet? I'm thinking of the heavy weight version.

I own 2 Longhunter shirts. One is the lighter weight and the other is the heavy weight. Both are very comfortable to wear and have kept me warm and dry in snowstorms on my hunting outtings here in NJ, where it can get down in the 20's and lower.I have also worn them at work while clearing snow from wind swept sidewalks while using snowblowers. The only thing that I would recomend is that you wear a scarf because the shirts have no collar. Otherwise they were good money spent.

get the hood.... and get one really big to layer under it

I use mine in our late season, and temps regularly are zero to teens.  I'm toasty warm...

This is something to consider. It's not on the website yet but will be soon. I'm calling it the   Longhunter Treker , it's a sleeveless pullover with an attached hood and slash pockets below the belt line. It's made of heavy 30oz wool which is a little thicker than the heavyweight Longhunter shirt. It can be worn over the shirt for those extreme weather conditions.

I've got a post a page or two back entitled 'Catwalk sneak peek' where I'm wearing a medicine bag I won here in a giveaway.  The maker (JeffB)asked for pics and I'm wearing the long sleeved version of the long hunter shirt, if you want to compare the two.  I'll admit Ron looks more like the real McCoy (I'm thinking Bear Claw Chris Lapp of Jeremiah Johnson fame), but then again he also looks better in the loin cloth pic that Shrew shooters like to dig up and haunt him with.  The heavy weight is extremely warm and should serve you well in Canada. NC bow season is rarely cold enough, but I wear it alot when 3D shoots crank back up in Jan-Feb.  I thought they ran large, but Ron is a big man.  I orginally got an XL (my pullover shirt size), but could have used it as a tepee with a guest room.  Exchanged it for a large and have all the layering room I need.

I like the looks of that ! When is it coming out ?

Ok that leads to another question I have, should wool be worn closer to the skin and modern jackets over the wool ?

Or, should wool be the outer wear and normal clothing underneath ?

I have read so much good on the properties of wool, but what I read sounds like wool is good near the skin, or do I need to have a woolen shirt and then a woolen Pullover over that ?

I love my Longhunter.  I have the grey shirt.  I get cold very easy due to low blood pressure.  I wear my shirt from 45F to -5F.  I took a doe with my smokepole last season when it was -5F outside.  I did layer with it at that temp.  Normaly I just wear a sweat wicking thermal under it.  I have sat in it in very wet snow and came home dry and warm.  I love that it is long.  It helps when sitting on a cold metal stand:)  You can not go wrong with the Longhunter!

To the OP - I love mine ( you really want a hood ) down to some pretty cold temps.  It goes without saying that for the temps you are discussing, the longhunter shirt would be one of a number of layers.

Ron - dang it man!  Every time I think I have the wool I need, you come up with some outstanding garment that I didn't know that I needed.  That Treker looks amazing!

When it's cold, I like a layer of wool as close to me as I can get it.  For an outer layer, wool seems to do the trick.  For insulation between the two - for me, I choose wool.

Highly recommend the longhunter shirt. I like it so much I sold my KOM vest, which was just to heavy for OK and TX hunting conditions. I would definitely recommend getting the hood to go with the shirt, especially if your hunting in cold, wet conditions. With my lightweight longhunter shirt and my Teresa Asbell hooded vest I'm ready to hunt regardless of weather.

It's the best money you will ever spend!. I love mine especially if i'm in the stand it keeps the wind from cumming up your back and is quit when you move and draw the bow.
