Howard Hill broadheads

I was thinking about getting some but I saw in the reviews on three rivers that a lot of people think they are hard to sharpen. I was wondering what some of you guys think. I am not the greatest at sharpening stuff but I can usually get it if I stick at it but I don't want something I can't ever get sharp. Also what other good 160 grain two blade glue on broadheads are out there that might be cheaper and easier to sharpen? Thanks RC

I have 2 words for you. "Ace Standard" . Tuff as they come, fly great, comes in 125,135,145 and 160 grain weights, LOTS easier to sharpen than the HH and cost only about $21 or so for 6. If you want one to try out, send me a PM.

The Ace Std is a great head. I kinda prefer the Ace Express 165 as I like the width and find the straight edge easier to sharpen.

I sharpen surgical instruments but have not discovered a fast method to sharpen & shave with HH BH's. The ferrule is too thick to get easily to the blade edge. IMO, these are great BH's other than that. I'm hoping to buy another dozen as soon as I find someone frustrated enough to sell them used in the classifieds.

I would steer you away from the Hills, there are so many better choices for a two blade out there...in no order, STOS, ACE, Zwickey, Magnus, Abowyer, Grizzly, Eclipse to name a few. Sorry if I left anyone's favorite out. A straight edge is much easier to sharpen than a convex or a concave edge.

My son shot a deer with a 140 grain hill that, I had (ruined) with a file for the second time. It went down in 30 yards. That was the second time that happened with that broadhead after I (ruined) it with a file the first time. hills are much easier to sharpen if you get your blades blank and then grind them to a single bevel. A number of us are using them like that. I have killed a number of deer with Hills in their standard shape, sharpening the way Hill did himself. that may be inferior by some folks shaving sharp standard, but I never lost a deer hit with a Hill. I have never lost a deer with a file sharpened Grizzly either and they are cheaper and a bit easier to get shaving sharp.

I have them and have sharpened them many times they take a saw tooth edge great and will retain the edge. The steel is hard and it takes some patience to get them very sharp.but saw tooth edge will penetrate with no problem.

I have used HH broad heads in the past and lots of the clones ( Hunters Head, Hunters Edge BIll Bagwell made some HH clones in the 80s I used ) One advantage is that they do FLY very well. All of that style do. But they can be tough to sharpen especially if you dont like to leave them File sharpened ( I like them honed after file sharpening ) Hill did quite well with file sharpened, so Its up to you
