For you Hill, Steen and Miller fans, how much string follow do these bows have?

From a perfectly vertical bow...1 inch, 2 inches, more?

The few I've seen look closer to 1/2" to 1" at the most.I would think any more you would just loose to much speed and not really gain anything from having more then that.JMO

I shot a Hill bow that didn't have any follow in it. Unstrung it was straight as can be.

I'm asking about the string follow bows that these three and others make, not their straight or backset bows.

Sunset Hills have about 1/4", Millers between 1/4" and 1/2", and Northern Mists are around 1/2". These are approximate numbers because the bows will settle a little after being shot in, and some will vary a little because of that both more and less. I had a Wesley from Craig that had roughly 1/4" as well. All of them are great shooters with the Sunset Hills being my personal favorite.

I started out by building a string follow copy of the old vintage lemonwood longbows, only glassed.  It has 1" of string follow and is a sweet shooter, though slow.  More due to my selection of oak as the exterior laminations I think than the string follow.   Since then, I've been building straight bows that end up coming off the form with maybe a bit less than 1/4" string follow, except I built two with forward risers that ended up with the same amount of pre-set instead!  8^)

I built several stringfollow bows from 1/4" to about 1 1/2" and there was very little difference in practical terms. I didn't run them over the  chronograph but they all were very nice shooting, smooth longbows.It was more trouble to build the ones with more stringfollow so I decided that any others I build will only have about 1/4" to 3/8" stringfollow.  Bob

Sorry missed understood Your question. I was just answering "How much string follow do these bows have?" "From a perfectly vertical bow." That is what I answered, So again sorry for miss understanding.

Spanky has it true.  My Sunset Hill is right around 5/16" string follow.


Spanky, were your ears burnin' last Saturday?  Nate and I were discussing your arrows while we were stompin' the mountains looking for venison.  Had a great time!

You got it Ray and beautiful bow by the way! I wish I could have been chasing Muleys with you guys! I'm sending one bow back to Nate to be shortened 2" and i'm also throwing in my best arrow, and the two that show way weak. You must be the proud owner of the new spine tester he mentioned! I'm sure you guys will figure out what's going on with em!

My 66" Miller Old Tom followed the string roughly 3/4's of the way to the rear of the arrow shelf. Still had the thump to take 2 300lb sows, big bad mommas.

Some years ago I built a couple of longbows, mild r/d.

I'm thinking of making another one and thought a string follow might be the ticket. From your responses, it is exactly the one to build.
