I recently drew a hunt at Oklahoma wildlife Departments coveted traditonal bowhunt at McAlester AAP's Hominy area. I've never been there. Anyone ever been? Could you share your experience(s)?

Here are a few previous posts.  At least you can see who is going and maybe pm them if you don't get enough responses. Good luck, and welcome to Tradgang!

Thanks for the previous post. I have been drawn for the "first" week Oct 15-17 in Boggy.  This will be my first time out there. I have been studying the maps pretty hard but the area is so huge it is hard to narrow it down to one area or even 1 or 2 mile sections.  Any advice?  I did talk to Ryan at the wildlife department and he said to concentrate on the acrons and persimmons.  Just looking for some pointers.  I will give a report when I get back from the hunt in return for any pointers I receive.  Thanks

CHris - The whole place is good, so wherever you get, just look for some acorns around one of tghe creeks or for persimmons, they are usually in the more open areas. One place I have hunted is in Boggy, you go around the west side of the lake the camp is on, you will cross a small bridge, as soon as you are across the bridge the first set of buker complexes on the left used to be one of the parking areas. This bunker complex is a good place to hunt or you can go to the northeast from the bunker complex and there is a creek that should have red oaks and water oaks on it.It is a popular place so you may have trouble getting on the right truck. My leasee is south of there about 6 miles and the only acorns we have are on the red oaks so no matter where you go, lokk around close to the creeks that may have large red oaks, there should be some acorns there.
I will try and send you a PM.

One suggestion:
The Mac deer are used to the roads and the bunkers so don't waste a lot of time hiking to the most secluded spot far from the road. Funnel (pinch point in the woods), acorns, creek are more important.

I shot a buck there two years ago very close to a bunker and an intersection.

Fellas, thanks for the input.  really looking forward to this hunt.  I will search the maps a little harder for water and pinch points like you decribed.  Do you guys know of anyone that has hunted the far east side of the hills just south of the lake.  A little bit of a hike but the topo and layout looks promising.

Well....It was HOT!!!  Afternoons were in the high 80's and the deer were locked down!  The weekend was pretty bad as far as number of deer taken.  When I left just after lunch on Sunday, there were only 17 deer harvested for the weekend. One guy in my group harvested a doe on Friday morning and two of us missed a doe each on Friday morning and another missed a 120"+ buck on Friday morning.  No other shots taken after Friday morning.  We drew for Boggy and we choose to the far upper north corner on the west side of the lake, right up against the north border as you cross over the bridge.  The food plot up there was not much to look at.  I did see a total of 9 does cross thru it as they were pushed by hunters.  One of the guys that works there said he should go for acorns and I would agree.  If I go again my strategy will be to be as far away from other hunters as possible.  The crazy and stupid things that some hunters do can ruin your hunt.  According to truck drivers out there, a large buck crosses the road a lot down where G road curves to the west and turns into Ashland Road.  Another possible good spot is to the far west boundary.  Apparently the lower section of boggy is a lot of Elm and Locust and then the Oaks start again on the far west side up against the boundary.  The hay meadow over there has also been cut and should make seeing deer easier.  we did see a lot of hog sign and some sightings of hogs right up against the creek as it goes into the lake on the west side of the lake.  Road 6 all the way south to Ashaland is closed!!  Enlarged blast area.  Good hunting and be safe!

I hunt there 30th and 31st of this month. I had my heart set on the North side of Ashland. Damn.

Honestly, after this last experience, I will go to the place with the least amount of hunters!  There are some guys out there doing some pretty stupid stuff, and they can ruin a good set-up pretty quickly.  My thought now is...go where the other guys are not so the deer can do their normal thing... It is a lot easier to figure out deer in their natural movement as opposed to guys pushing them around doing "spot and stalks"..sorry if you prescribe to this manner of hunting.  That style may work on your on turf but in a new area with other hunters I don't think it is very successful or kind to the other hunters.

I sat 12 hours on Fri and Sat. and 3 hours on Sunday. Only had one opportunity but he spotted me and reversed his course.

I sat like 12 1/2 hours on Friday and Saturday and killed a nice 6 point Friday evening.  Him and a 7 pointer were chasing a doe all around me for 45 minutes before I finally got a shot.  I had one other deer come by me on Friday morning but I couldn't tell for sure if it was a doe or a button buck and I didn't want to waste my buck tag on a button, so I didn't shoot.

Deer Creek, first time for me in that area.  Didn't see a lot of deer, but I also didn't find a lot of acorns in the area we selected to park and hunt either.

Only found a few acorns too. Had a very young spike come into them Fri and Sat though.
