Is the Montec G5 3-blade broadhead O.K. to use with a 40# recurve?  Or should I go to a 2-blade?

You can use a three blade. Make it sharp. However I have not seen great results with that head. It has a very steep angle and tends to rob power. when you need it most. Just my thoughts.

I've used several of the G-5 broadheads: B52, Tekan, Montec Stainless, and Striker.  I have the new Montec Carbons but haven't hunted with them. I've killed deer with all of these -- but with a 60 pound compound not traditional!

I'm going to be hunting with 46-48 pound recurves this year. I'm concerned about penetration so I'm going to use a 2-blade broadhead when hunting with the recurve.

However, I have a heck of a time putting a razor edge on the Montec Stainless -- that's why I bought the carbon steel ones.

Montecs work fine out of a compound, but they really aren't that sharp.  I'd opt for something else.

For probably the same money, you can buy VPA Terminators/Woodsman Elites/KK Trailmakers, all better 3 blade heads than the G5, IMO, and will do fine with 40 lb.  Two blades are normally the head of choice for light equipment, tho.  Discipline and shot placement is what really matters.

I'd take a look at the Red Feather "Phoenix". Stan is a sponsor on here and makes an awesome 3 blade single bevel head, glue-on or screw-in. He makes it out of one piece of steel! Check it out.

Sorry....but powdered metal 'just as water' heads have NO place in bowhunting....compound included.  

Hunt with real hardware, not make believe tinker toys.

Silly heads, with steep angles on the blades.  A buddy of mine owns an archery shop and has had a lot of them returned by compound shooters after one of them failed when it hit a bone.  Listen to the advice above and get a solid steel head.  Two or three blade.  With that light of a bow get real close and aim true.

I used them last year, there was  next to nothing for blood trail and they were awful to sharpen.  I would not recommend them.

I was extremely pleased with some single bevel blades from eclipse (2 blade) out of a light poundage bow a couple of years ago.  At 18 yards if I hadnt hit the off side shoulder joint I would very likely have gotten a complete pass through.  That was accomplished with a 38# longbow.

Although there might be better suited broadheads for that light of bow this bull was killed with a Montec, complete pass thru.  In a over the counter unit in CO.

i agree with guys on the all steel two and three blades. i shoot only 45# mostly 2 blades. at 40# you won't have a lot of knetic energy. i believe you will have better penetration. good luck

The only good thing I could say is they're cut on contact.  That's it.  Grab a STOS and compare it to the angle on the G5 and you probably didn't have to ask the question.

I have a new package of them I have never opened.  I shot the practice blades that I also bought a package of, and just never got around to hunting with the G5's, so I guess I can't answer your question.  Probably should have not posted anything, but oh well, it was already typed.  LOL

I shoot 55# so cannot speak for 40# but I have had great success with the G5 Montec.  The blade angle is a non issue - in reality it is no steeper than something like the bleeders of a Magnus 4 blade or Zwickey. I never heard anyone balk at those bleeders hindering penetration.  The steel is very tough, I've shot them into a poured cement foundation and bounced them off rocks during practice - no issues with durability.  Sharpened on a diamond hone they are scary sharp in seconds. My experiences on game have been stellar with some of the best blood trails I've seen.  Several animals the blood trail did not go 5 feet - blood was pooled everywhere.

I'll vouch for Southpawshooter and the Montecs. I have been on a few of those blood trails with him and the end result was venison in the freezer. It's a good head that works.

Aside from the quality of metal in the head.....no one asked what type of game you will be shooting.
