I had several vacation days lined up late October into November for some deer huntin around home, but some news at work forced me to change up plans.

With budgetary issues effecting the FD I work for, some staffing cuts are looming. Being one of the old farts, approaching retirement, I, among others was offered a early "incentive" to hang up the boots. I was planning on doing so next June, but now its looking like Oct 31st will be my last day on the job. Darn, right in time for some heavy pre-rut action! So I'll cancel the 3 vacation days the end of October so I can cash them out.

I have some good friends who have been buggin me to come down to Ohio , so Im thinking a Mid November Ohio whitetail hunt will have to do.

After 23 years on the job, preceded by 5 years of military service, I'm ready to take some time off. No more missed shoots, no more workin weekends.

No more competing for time off to hunt. Im gonna be callin Jim and ordering another Thunderstick for my retirement present to myself. Probably another MOAB for elk hunting. My oldest son graduates next June, and I'm taking him on a month long backcountry elk hunt for his graduation present. Him and I, a couple of MOAB's, a heavy pack and chasin the dream.
...stood alone on a montaintop, starin out at a great divide, I could go east, I could go West, it was all up to me to decide, just then I saw a young hawk flyin and my soul began to rise......

Good deal my friend! Sounds like you earned some time in the woods. Stay safe, shoot straight and thank you for the service and hard years.      :clapper:

Congratulations, on your retirement.  I'm glad to hear your able to afford to retire.  I also work for an F.D. and almost got laid off in May.  I've got about 10 brothers with 20+ yrs on the job.  They're too young though to leave.  And our village couldn't afford to offer any early buy-out.  We'll see what next May brings.  Enjoy sleeping through the nights, eating your meals un-interrupted and resting your back!  Take care.

I'm happy for you...now enjoy that time with your family and friends in the great outdoors.  You and your son will have a lifetime of memories on that elk hunt.  :)
