I got hooked up with a private rancher, has a huge resident herd, has some mature management bulls that dont have great mass, 5x5 and 6x6, and 36 inch or so spread, that he wants out of the gene pool, has a guaranteed gun hunt with permanent blinds and stands. I talked with him, and booked him, and he is gonna let us try it with a bow, for a week. He has several good pinch points and limited water they have to come to, on the west slope of colorado. Gotta be there on Oct. 1. He offered these managment bulls at half price, including tax and license, everything. I am so stoked, been dreaming of this my whole life, never could of afforded it before now. Probably my only chance to elk hunt out west. Just wanted to share.

Sam, how does that ranch work?  Are you hunting with a bow ?  Isn't the Colorado elk bow season over before October 1 ?

Archery ends sept 28 but there are tags that one can use weapon of choice.

Houseman that is what the guide has for me. I am gonna give it my best with a bow, if all else fails my have to resort to a firearm last day.

Best of luck to you. But just being out here in the mountains is a thrill in it self.

Amen brother!!!

Muledeer and elk hunted for years and loved the camping/campfire/mountains as much as the hunting!

I have never been able to go until now, my daughter is grown, teaching in Ohio, My wife and I have worked hard all out lives, have a little retirement put back and no debt, but still live within our means as always. My wife and I lost our son 8 years agon in a car accident. If I dont succeed with a bow, will use his favorite rifle, a 45/70 Marlin Guide Gun, that he took several deer with.

Best of luck, koger.  It will be an experience you will never forget, especially if you connect with the bow.  I still remember the first elk I killed like it was yesterday, and that was many years ago.

ChuckC......Colorado allows the use of a bow as a method of take during all rifle seasons, but you are still required to wear blaze orange.  Same with using a muzzleloader during the rifle seasons.  They used to publish it in the regs, but I haven't seen that table for a couple of years.

Thanks Bill.  Didn't know that.

Good luck Sam.  Enjoy that hunt, kill or not, it is special out in the mountains.

Good for you! If you hunt them once you will do it agian that I can guarantee, you will find a way. There is something with elk that is almost spiritaul when you are amongst them. Just the sights, smells, sounds and terrain where elk run will lure you back. One year I would love to do a nice guided hunt like your doing.

Go get-em Samuel!  I can relate to your situation of being finally retired and having a chance to head west. I spent 30 years teaching in KY hearing about dream hunts in the Rockies.  With work finally behind me, I've spent the last two Septembers roaming Colorado at 11,000 feet - BAD KNEES and all.  My first try was a DIY hunt where me an another guy hiked 7 miles from 9,500' to 11,400' with 80 pounds of gear on our back.   That was really rough but the "hike" into God's country was worth it.  Last year we spent two solid weeks in a limited draw area on an unguided archery drop camp setup.  It was wonderful.  Breath taking scenery and lots of elk!  We had multiple opportunties on bulls but came up a few yards short each time on getting the shot that we wanted.  But I'd do it again in a heartbeat!  Here's a photo from my last hunt for a little inspiration.  Good luck on yours!
