The thunderstorms had finally moved on to the east and a cool North breeze made it feel like a perfect day to see if the tree chickens were cutting hickory yet.

I got all dressed with my bug skinz underneath to ward of the crawly bittin critters, grabbed a bow(the little 7 Lakes 51@28 got the call this time) took about a half dozen arrows in a sidestalker quiver.

The woods were just waking up when I got there. I started easing back through the timber watching and listening. I made it only about 1/4 mile when, dang it.. I  found out I had forgotten something very important(TP).  and I knew within about 30 seconds that I was going to need it.

I got through that almost disaster and left my T-shirt hanging on the gate so I could pack it back to the truck when I finished hunting.

After about another 15 minutes I heard a very familiar sound. It almost sounds like rain coming down through the leaves. That could only mean one thing, the squirrel were actually cutting on the hickory nuts.

I stalked in close enough to start scanning the tree that was dropping all of the hull litter on the ground. That took a bit of time with all the leaves but I finally laid eyes on the intended target. He was sitting up there as pretty as a picture with nothing between him and me but air.
I nocked an arrow and began trying to burn a hole through him with my eyes while bringing the string back to my anchor point.

I wasn't all that surprised to see the arrow sail cleanly over that tiny little head and continue on out over some over grown pasture land. It landed in the grass and weeds. I hadn't though ahead as to how difficult it could be to find my arrow. See that grass and those weeds were just about shoulder high. They were so tall that I couldn't see all of the multiflora rose and blackberry bushes hiding in it either.

I must be living right because I finally found my arrow. Bug skinz maybe great for keep the ticks off but are a might thin to be walking through briers that felt like about a hundred cats clawing at just about every part of my body..lol

It was then and there that I decided to turn my squirrel hunt into some stump shooting and wait until fall for those evil tree rats to come down onto my playing level.

I was able to make it back to the truck(with my t-shirt) with the same number of arrows that I had left with. It was a great hunt!!!! So great I tried to get some self photos so I would be able to remember it.

Mudd, did you use your homemade squirrel heads to shoot them with. I shot a possum the other morning with one of the heads you sent me, but that fat little rascal just looked at me and ran off across the ditch and into the field. Squirrels better lookout this fall.

Mudd, just make yourself some arrows that look like these blaze orange ones I make.  I have never lost an arrow since when shooting at them in the trees.  Course I have broken quite a few!

I have brightly colored flu flu fletchs on my arrows but when the weeds are as thick as grass and shoulder high, well I felt darn blessed to find in in less than 15 minutes.

never tried hunting them with a bow,but thats going to change this year.i am also going to give pheasants a try.suzanne st.charles made me some brite green flu-flus with judos.should be able to find them when i miss.best of luck mudd,steve

Mudd, I stopped by and saw our mutual friend Loyd Lippert for a few minutes the other day.  Heh... Heard about the poor t-shirt, but in much less tactful terminology.      

The evil tree rats will be on the ground soon enough, and fair game for a gumbo!!!  Grats on recovering the arra!  I never seem to find the ones I shoot into the air.    :(

Hey Mudd!  That photo is from last year.  However, I do alot of squirell hunting with my bow.  I will say this..we have big fat fox squirells here in Illinois.  They are a big target compared to gray squirells that other people have.  But even these big squirells have great reflexes.  I quit using flu-flu's years ago due to the fact that they dodge the arrow too much.  I use just regular fletching and paint them blaze orange so I can find them if I miss!  Works great!
