I am done messing with wood shafts! I love wood but have been playing hell with spine and straightness. I was over spined with Surewood shafts so I went down in spine for my 42#'s and now they're so flimsy that they bend on the shot..(like wet noodles) ugh.. anyhow I am going to carbon.. I really don't want to hear how to solve these wood problems, I've decided to go with carbon.. frustrated.. anyhow I have some GT Traditional shafts (blems from Big Jim) that are shooting well but I don't like the finish. I want to paint them a brown or dark brown. Has anyone ever done this? What should I use that will be a finish that won't scrape off and not change the dynamics of the shaft too much, and be foam target friendly? I guess I could paint them with a spray, and then over cover with Spar Urethane? but figure that would change the weight too much? anybody have any ideas?

Are you talking about painting the entire shaft? Any thing you do to an arrow will have alittle affect,but probably not a whole lot.Paint on the point end will most likely not be as durable as the woodgrain finish on them already if you paint the entire shaft.Sounds like alot of work in what you are talking about.I haven't painted the whole shaft on a carbon arrow,did spray a crown and crested a carbon arrow.But just prefer to use wraps these days,quick and easy and Onestringer has some nice looking Traditional style wraps.

Yes, I'm talking about painting the whole shaft and then maybe? over covering with some type of durable, foam friendly finish. Maybe I'm all wet on this? Yes, I have used onestringer wraps and like them, never have painted a cap.I like the price on the blems but don't like the looks.

I spray my carbons with Pactra RC car paint then over coat with Gasket Laq. The cans of paint are pricy so doing the whole shaft is costly. If you put enough coats of paint on a shaft you can change the spine. Prep the shafts well or you will get paint chipping off even in straw bales.

Thanks M60, I would think that if I overcoat with Gasket Laq, that I could use any kind of paint under it? think? Maybe Krylon?

Tom, have you used Krylon and if so did you overcoat it?

I spray painted an entire Gold Tip Traditional shaft with bright red Rustoleum "Painter's Touch", whatever that is. I then overcoated it with clear enamel. Any overcoating would work. I am still looking for a top finish that does not get target burn. See the other thread on here regarding arrow finishes.

Thx Killy, Did the rustoleum/clear enamel stay on or did it scratch off? I can always use arrow lube for sticking foam.

Yep.I think he said that he uses automotive primer without any type of clear coat over it.

No, i have not used Krylon as yet. I am open to new ideas so I will give it a try next time. I just did a doz. Carbon Express shafts for a friend. His wife wants green and yellow, bright as possible. So I used NASCar colors. Bright green and bright yellow.

My squirrel arrows get a coat of white krylon then a coat of floresent orange . Last longer than the arrows .Any good spray paint should work.
