I am thinking about making a Ghillie Suit and if anyone has used yarn from a craft or fabric store. If so, how did it work? I know I wouldn't leave any burrs in the woods when I was done.

I also would like to make a suit. I've seen where people die the burlap. I've seen camo burlap in the sporting goods stores for blinds, would this be easier to cut into strips than the mess of dieing the burlap and cutting into strips?

I just bought one or should I say won on the St judes auction. It was nice when I got it out of the box, it was brand new.

I took an old hunting coat with zipper busted and it was worn out any way and cut the fabric into strips and added it to the suit and plan on adding regular yarn as well to give it some variety. I think a mixture of the stuff in it adds alot to it.

You can buy the camo yarn at wally world fairly cheap. And I think it would work great

Use jute cord my SSGT did that for his in the Marine Corps. They made us use burlap but jute ended up being faster and easier to make one with. He died one reel OD green with fabric dye and left the other one brown and then cut segments from it for each strand on the suit and then brushed it out like you do with burlap only it worked a lot faster.

iit is a lot of work... but I used burlap from wallywerld..., gray, brown, green RIT dye...  a lil dental floss and shoe goo.. At the time 6-7 years ago, I think about $20! It is not a cure all and there are things I would have done differently... But hey this really works!!!  these pics are subjective as this is just taken from a footlocker so it is still a lil matted down..

 The End Result

I cut my burlap in to 18x22 in squares to dye. After it dried I basically seperated thread by thread the basic colored burlap, brown and green into threads

I used dental floss and a 1 inch mesh net to sew onto an old Oversize MIL SURP BDO jacket and boonie hat! I then used shoe goo over the knots, a lil OD paint once that dried and began tying bundle of 8-12 threads to the netting....

I would have done better in the center and fill this up...[ Note- the empty inside of the arm is necessary for archery, but a good arm guard will stop the sleeves from twisting like they want to do...
Afterwards i cut the gray into 1 in wides strips and tied that in a few spots...   I hand washed in the tub with scent killing soap...
a few of the pin on leaves to add some depth.. I wear old mossy oak pants and use a 1/2 face mask life turkey hunters use and some light weight gloves...

No I didn't use black as the old saying is that black is the absence of light... many folks believe that black doesn't work in a ghillie as it is the depth of texture that makes it work and black sticking out doesn't work...

I added these two to see how light and shade are effected by texture... I have had deer see me, but not tell just what I was... It helps you disappear, but it is hot so I carry it to the stand site, spray down with scent killer and then put it on.. It is just enough to break up the human outline and the depth/texture allows you to be not  anything that blobs out    (think high summer mid day sun here.... )

Where are you in Wisconsin? I am in Spring Green.
Your Chicken from McDonald's, Tyson Foods, or Perdue Farms spent most of it's life stuffed in a cage with three or four others, occupying a space about the size of a book page...None for me, thanks...

Great suit Slasher! Not too much garnish and great colors. Some people add too much and end up looking like chewbacca. Sniper doctrine for suits is 40% artificial and 60% real foliage. Less is more some times.

I cut down the threads over the left chest and with an armguard it shoots fine with no interference...

As for the legs... They are usually covered up!!! Too many ticks and chiggers to leave them wonders out there for the world to see...

I tried making one but it weighed 40# so I just won me one off that auction site. :)  Got pants and jacket for $35.00. Light and works great.
