I have an old selfbow that has seen some use. No splits or cracks just a lot of wear and tear on the finish. I am thinking about sanding it down and refinishing. Any tips finsh or prep? What finish should I use?

After I did mine, I finished it off with two coats of Minewax Natural.

 

go lite on the sanding to remove old finish, you can reduce weight up to 3lbs with heavey sanding. I like the hand rubbed finishes, so I use tru-oil. Three to five thin coats with a lite sanding using 00 steelwool in between each coat. It will give you a great finish. Apply a couple times a year if you hunt if wet weather. You can remove the shine if you like with the steelwool or pumice powder.

Tru Oil here too...................great product.

I was wondering about the Tru Oil. I have used Tru Oil before, just not on bows. I think I am going to give that a shot. Thanks for the replies.

BTW the Minwax Natural finish looks pretty good to. Any special steps between the two coats. Any sanding?
