Wondering if anyone has tried tamping down 15 grs. of lead wire or shot etc.. in the front of the ferrule on a 175 gr. Abowyer Brown Bear to match a 190 gr. field pt. Keeping your point taper at 3/4" in length would seemingly work but buying a 3 pack would make for a really expensive experiment and the factory did not know for sure when I called them. Any help appreciated.

That is not much of an increase. If it makes that much difference to you, why don't you try the adapter weights that go into the back end of an insert. pounded lead bent around the thing doesn't sound so great.

#6 lead shot weighs app 2 grains per pellet.7 pellets tamped into the end of the ferrule shouldn't take up much length but I'm not sure exactly how much.I have put 7-8 pellets into the hollow cavity of a steel adaptor without tamping.If you are shooting wood shafts,I would think tamping them in with a small steel punch would be a good idea.Just looking at 6 of these shot,I doubt you would lose more than 1/4" of ferrule length if you tamped them in,possibly less.You can also get the fixture to drill into your taper and install a piece of nail,to add weight.

JimB, I am shooting Douglas Fir and would use a flat steel punch as you suggest, I would just feel better knowing up front the idea is feasible with what they cost.

I bet you could tamp some lead into a field point,measuring the ferrule depth inside-before and after,then call Abowyer and see exactly how long that ferrule is inside.That should give you a good idea if it is what you want.I'm sure that a piece of nail in your wooden taper would work,won't need to shorten the taper and might even add a little strength.I believe Braveheart and other sponsors should have the drilling fixture.Good luck.

Because of the length of the Brown Bear you will be moving that weight farther out on the shaft compared to a field point.   The 15 grains imo will be crossed out because of this.
