Shot at my first groundhog today with my selfbow a little harder to hit than I had thought.I did hit right behind him though maybe I will get him next time.Anyone have pics of groundhogs to post. Thanks

Flesner

Bowhunted them for the first time a couple years back. They are way harder to get a shot at with a longbow than I thought they would be.
I thought I was a pretty good still hunter. Deer are a piece of cake to get up on compared to a pasture poodle!

LeverActionman

Lots of trees where I hunt so sneaking up on them is not so hard well at least till about 25 or 30 yards after that is real hard.

I grew up hunting them in Ohio with Bear Kodiak Mag. They are tough to kill. I lost a lot of arrows down the hole when the critter ran with my arrow. Only instant kill was one I made where arrow went into one ear and out the other.
I do not see many here in Alabama.

Loaded with 'em here. I'm gonna go out myself. Ever try a fish pole with them? Fun.

Get a medium action rod, maybe a 7 footer, and some 15lb test line. Take a lawn chair and a cooler full of your favorite beverages along. Tie a loop in the end(a slip) and lay the loop over the chuckhole, kick back and relax. I'll tell you what, when you get ahold of one, the fight is ON! LOL. Not to mention the looks that people give you when they see the crazy fishing in the middle of a pasture.

I never killed a g-hog with a bow but I killed plenty with a handgun when I was a youngster. The same method I used with a pistol should be deadly with a bow as well. I would sneak around old barns and old farm buildings during early afternoon and catch g-hogs out away from their dens feeding and they would raise up and stand there motionless. They would usually give me enough time to raise my pistol and take aim and shoot before they would bolt for their den. This worked well for short range hunting/stalking but it's much harder getting a shot off at close range when hunting fence rows and open hay fields and woods edges. They are very sharp and a great challenge with the bow.

Here's a couple of pics of one I shot during deer season from my treestand.  It was one of the few days it warmed up between heavy snow falls.  He didn't make it to higher ground during the brief thaw!  The snuffer didn't allow it!!  It's the first animal I've ever taken with a long bow.

After deer, they're one of my favorite targets!

That old Savannah was pretty hard on the population.

At 30 yds, this was the luckiest shot I ever made! When people say they're tuff, believe it! This one ran 15 yds with that hole!

I get so excited at getting close and getting a shot I usually blow it.  I skimmed an arrow off of ones head this year at 15 yards and missed a couple of more times.

I'm not one for causes but that one could be construed as animal cruelty.  An arrow or bullet is at least a sporting attempt at a quick death.
